A Note From Richard Montaño
“Be the Change you wish to see”. ~ Mahatma Ghandi
As a kid growing up on the streets, I witnessed so many things. Things that today as a father, I can't imagine any child being subjected to. For me at the time, that was just normal. How can you possibly know anything different unless you experience it? On a daily basis I watched lives wasting away in absolute and complete self-destruction. Ironically, I accredit many aspects of my success to these early childhood experiences, for they taught me who I didn’t want to be and inspired me to make change. I realized early on how powerless I was over others, especially as a child born helpless. When I emancipated myself at age 9, I didn’t realize it was not only my immediate enviroment that would change, but even greater a change was how my developing character would transpire in creating the future me. Had I not taken the steps to help myself, it is unlikely my desire to influence and empower others would be so great. With that said, without the kindess, compassion, encouragment and generosity of others I am certain I would have never had the satisfaction of seeing my potential and reaching for my dreams.
I will be attending a fundraiser this Monday, June 8th for Promises 2 Kids, a non-profit that provides tools and opportunities to over 3,300 current and former foster youth in San Diego on an annual basis. Please take a moment to look at their website, and if so inclined make a donation in time, kind or cash.
