GSAS Parents Meeting with Dean Alonso
Monday, November 26th, 4-5pm
302 Philosophy Hall (conference room in Nous)

Dean Carlos Alonso has scheduled a meeting for GSAS parents to give direct feedback about he status of current parental accommodations offered through GSAS. Please RSVP if you can attend.
Any parents with questions can reach out to Kate McIntyre, Quality of Life Chair, at asgc.qualityoflife@columbia.edu. We are working on finding childcare for this hour; please contact Kate if you need childcare to attend the meeting.

UAH Internet Survey
In March of 2018, GSAS informed its PhD students that "students residing in university housing will have internet service paid for by the school." It has come to the attention of ASGC that this commitment has not been fulfilled for all doctoral students. Dean Alonso has informed us that GSAS is working with UAH to install Columbia internet in all buildings within the next 18 months, and that doctoral students will receive free internet service as Columbia internet is installed in their buildings.

To determine how widespread this issue is, which buildings are affected, and how swiftly the problem is being addressed, the Quality of Life committee of ASGC is conducting a survey—for GSAS PhD students in university housing only. Please complete the survey at your earliest convenience.

ASGC Student Travel Grant winter deadline is November 21.
At the last plenary meeting, a vote was passed to change the schedule of Student Travel Grants to better suit conference acceptance dates. There will now be four yearly deadlines: September 21, November 21, January 25 and April 26.
Please click here for more details and the application.

Interested in becoming a Department Representative?  A few PhD and MA positions are STILL OPEN. Departments must have a representative to remain in good standing and eligible for ASGC funding.

3-Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition
Championship: December 7, 2018, 2:30-4:30 p.m.

The 3-Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition showcases the research of Columbia’s doctoral student community. Participants are challenged to share their research clearly and effectively with a broad, non-specialist audience in just three minutes.

3MT helps doctoral students to develop their presentation and communication skills, which are vital for academic conferences and careers both inside and outside of academia. Through the competition, participants also have the opportunity to share their work with the Columbia and local communities by presenting in front of an esteemed panel of University and corporate judges and a diverse audience.

ASGC is composed of MA & PhD students from GSAS departments and is the main successor of the Graduate Student Advisory Council (GSAC). All affiliate departments are encouraged to designate a Department Representative to participate in plenary meetings. Department Representatives vote on ASGC initiatives and policy changes as well as serve as liaisons between their departments and ASGC.

Please reach out to your current Department Representative to discuss matters you would like to see ASGC raise or, if the position is vacant, consider becoming a representative yourself.
