Year 2 - December
Advent starts this Sunday!

Last year I sent out daily emails from December 1-24 for each day of the "Spiritual Christmas Crib" devotion.  The mini-reflections and prayers for each day are very short, but provide enough to contemplate on for the day. Some days offer a suggested sacrifice. Perfect for children and adults!

Hymn: Hark, a Herald Voice is Calling

Text: anonymous, revised by Pope Urban VIII in 1632
Translator: Rev. Edward Caswell
Tune: from the Fulda Hymn Book of 1695
A Few Facts:
  • This hymn comes from the original Latin hymn "Vox clara ecce intonant", written in the 5th or 6th century. To learn more, you could read Fr. Z's article Digging into Vox Clara.
  • The liturgical use of this hymn is traditionally for Lauds during Advent.
  • Learn about the translator, Rev. Edward Caswell, and read the notes on the hymn by Rev. Matthew Britt by visiting this page.
Printable Score

1. Hark! a herald voice is calling:
    'Christ is nigh,' it seems to say;
'Cast away the dreams of darkness,
    O ye children of the day!'

2. Startled at the solemn warning,
    Let the earth-bound soul arise;
Christ, her Sun, all sloth dispelling,
    Shines upon the morning skies.

3. Lo! the Lamb, so long expected,
    Comes with pardon down from heaven;
Let us haste, with tears of sorrow,
    One and all to be forgiven;

4. So when next He comes with glory,
    Wrapping all the earth in fear,
May He then as our defender
    On the clouds of heaven appear.

5. Honor, glory, virtue, merit,
    To the Father and the Son,
With the co-eternal Spirit,
    While unending ages run. Amen.

Connect on the Google+ Community

I started a Google+ community for these studies. This has great potential for being a place to: 1) discuss the music we are learning each month, and 2) share our learning experiences with others. I think it would be helpful if Q&A, interesting facts found, or other helpful information could be easily seen and discussed by all.  Think of it as an online study and support group.

Let's enjoy this learning experience together!

If you are new to Google+,  here's a great tutorial on getting started
