We are challenging ourselves to learn the longest of the Mass propers: the Credo. I chose Credo I for its simpler melody, and because it is often used during the weeks that prepare us for Lent.

Lesson Plans

Week 1

  1. Read a little history. Print the score and translation.  (score and mp3 audio found here on Corpus Christ Watershed.)

  2. Follow along with this pronunciation guide video.  This week, practice pronunciation of these lines: 

    Credo in unum Deum, Patrem omnipotentem,
    factorem caeli et terrae,
    visibilium omnium, et invisibilium.
    Et in unum Dominum Jesum Christum,
    Filium Dei unigenitum.
    Et ex Patre natum ante omnia saecula.
    Deum de Deo, Lumen de lumine,
    Deum verum de Deo vero. 

  3. Listen to the chant, and follow along. 


Week 2

  1. Practice pronunciation of these lines: (start at 2:25 mark)

    Genitum, non factum, consubstantialem Patri:
    per quem omnia facta sunt.
    Qui propter nos homines,
    et propter nostram salutem descendit de caelis.
    Et incarnatus est de Spiritu Sancto ex Maria Virgine:
    Et homo factus est.

  2. Begin copywork & illustrations to aid meditating on the text. 

  3. Listen to the chant, and follow along. 

Week 3

  1. Practice pronunciation of these lines: ( 4:15 mark)

    Crucifixus etiam pro nobis:
    sub Pontio Pilato passus, et sepultus est.
    Et resurrexit tertia die,
    secundum Scripturas.
    Et ascendit in caelum:
    sedet ad dexteram Patris.
    Et iterum venturus est cum gloria,
    judicare vivos et mortuos:
    cuius regni non erit finis. 

  2. Finish copywork & verse illustrations.

  3. Listen to the chant, and follow along.  Here is another beautiful recording 

Week 4

  1. Practice pronunciation of these lines: (6:18 mark)

    Et in Spiritum Sanctum,
    Dominum, et vivificantem:
    qui ex Patre Filioque procedit.
    Qui cum Patre et Filio simul adoratur,
    et conglorificatur: qui locutus est per Prophetas.
    Et unam sanctam catholicam et apostolicam Ecclesiam. Confiteor unum baptisma in remissionem peccatorum. Et exspecto resurrectionem mortuorum.
    Et vitam venturi saeculi. Amen. 

  2. Teens/Adults: Read the newly released Pastoral Letter on Sacred Music by Archbishop Sample

  3. Listen to the chant, and follow along.
