If you've been with us since last September, this month completes Year 5! Once you've learned the Agnus Dei this month, you will have learned the entire Mass of the Angels Ordinary. I'll include audio links for all the chants so you can review.

As I plan the upcoming year, I'm hoping to simplify yet still offer the free lesson plans. There are close to 2,000 subscribers, and once it hits that number, Mail Chimp will require a substantial monthly fee. (I'm already paying for the website and Musescore subscription.) I'm thinking to post the lesson plans straight to my website instead of sending emails.  There are already 5 years of lesson plans there now. I would just add Year 6 to the website, and add a new link on that page each month for the viewable/printable monthly lesson plan. (It would look very much like the lesson plans below.) I'll keep you posted. Thank you for understanding, and if you'd like to offer suggestions/thoughts, I'd appreciate it!

Lesson Plans

Week 1

  1. Score:  PDF download freely available under Mass VIII on CCWatershed

  1. Listen & follow along.  Focus this week on learning the first invocation:

Agnus Dei, qui tolis peccata mundi, miserere nobis.

Here is a simple history and translation to read to learn more.

Week 2

  1. Listen & follow along.  Focus this week on learning the second invocation. The words are the same, but the melody is different.

Agnus Dei, qui tolis peccata mundi, miserere nobis.

  2. Begin copywork & chant illustrations.  Or here's a coloring page. Try to memorize what you've learned so far.

Week 3

  1. Listen & follow along.  Focus this week on learning the third invocation.  The melody is the same as the first invocation, but the text has a different ending.

Agnus Dei, qui tolis peccata mundi, dona nobis pacem.

  2. Finalize memorization.

  3. Extra activity: Listen to  one or more orchestral versions mentioned in the article you read in week 1. Which is your favorite? How do they compare to the chant you've been learning?
    a) Beethoven

    b) Bach
    c) Barber

Week 4

  1. Visit this site to review De Angelis (Mass VIII)

  2. Teens/Adults: Watch the next installment of On a Sacred Note: 20th Century Choral Music
