Check, Review, Update

March 2019

Spring has come again, temperatures are warming, the snow is melting and hopefully sunshine is on the way. With spring comes change, renewal, and a little spring cleaning. Around this time of year, we always like to remind our users to review their NocTel accounts and do a little spring cleaning if needed. Below are a few items you may want to check:
  • Clean Your Handsets: Desk phones and mobile phones are items we constantly touch, and something you may not think to clean as often as you should. Also, dust is a problem for electronic equipment. To see the best way to clean your Polycom desk phone check our how-to article.
  • Voicemails: NocTel only stores voicemails for 90 days, so if you need to save one for longer make sure you make a back up to your computer. Voicemails that have not been deleted can be downloaded individually from the control panel.
  • 911 Address: 911 addresses are linked to a NocTel telephone number, and then the address can be assigned to any physical extension. Make sure your e911 addresses are updated if you have had a change of address and make sure extensions have the correct address relative to their deployed location.
  • Inbound Call Routing: Do you need to make any updates to how your inbound calls are routed? Maybe the audio for a menu needs to be updated or refreshed. Take a few minutes to review and test your inbound calls to make sure they fit your needs.
  • Outdated Recordings: While all recordings used for things like menus can have a description added, it becomes cumbersome when there are many recordings available that are no longer used or were saved mistakenly. If you'd prefer to keep older recordings, consider changing the description to indicate the recording is old or the date it was taken out of use for better management.
NocTel Knowledgebase

Have you checked out our online support Knowledgebase? If you haven't, head on over to noctel.com/help and see our many how-to guides. The Knowledgebase is a great resource for users that have questions about features and how to use them as well as self-service for common procedures and issues. If there isn't a guide on something you are looking for let us know! We are always working to add new articles and improvements for our users.
The First Call

143 years ago on March 10th, 1876, Alexander Graham Bell made the first call in history to his assistant, Thomas Watson who was in the next room. His words: "Mr. Watson - come here - I want to see you". Today we can communicate across the globe conveniently with devices Bell probably would never have dreamed of, but it's always good to remember where it all started and how far we have come.

Maybe someday we'll be making calls to each other between planets or galaxies as normally as it is to call across cities, countries, and continents!
Polycom SoundPoint/SoundStation End of Life
countdownmail.com
Time is running out if you have not already started the process of phasing out SoundPoint models of Polycom VoIP phones from active use. Polycom will be ending support for these models on December 31, 2019. NocTel has also adopted this timeline and will not support the IP series phones after the end of life date. When products are end of life they will no longer receive firmware updates that address issues and security vulnerabilities of the devices. Manufacture of these devices have already ended, which makes procuring replacements of the same models increasingly difficult and likely more expensive due to scarcity.

We encourage all of our customers to consider replacing the SoundPoint IP series phones with the Polycom VVX Business Media Phone series. The VVX Series offers a wide variety of improved functionality, security and better user experience. You can check out some of the product specs on NocTel's website.

Please contact us at sales@noctel.com if you are interested in making a switch to the VVX series or have any questions.

List of affected models:
SoundPoint IP 300/301
SoundPoint IP 320/321
SoundPoint IP 330/331
SoundPoint IP 335
SoundPoint IP 430
SoundPoint IP 450
SoundPoint IP 500/501
SoundPoint IP 550
SoundPoint IP 560
SoundPoint IP 600/601
SoundPoint IP 650
SoundPoint IP 670

Because of the security issues of the models, NocTel will be changing the procedure for how the above devices connect and provision to our service. The new procedures will require manual intervention on the user's part to keep the devices connected and in service. For security purposes the new procedures will limit the affected device's features and functions. If the user elects not to make the needed changes, these devices will not be operable with NocTel's service.

After the end of support date NocTel will be unable to provide support services for the models listed above and we highly recommend you upgrade to avoid service impact, exercise good security practice, and receive continued support for deployed handsets.
