Today is Tuesday October 4 and it is around 3 pm.

So we have entered the month of October which has a long history of increased volatility. It has been said that if you don’t like the weather, wait a minute….. I suspect this month will be no different as we have already experienced up days followed by similar down days thus far.

Q3 earnings season will begin shortly and this is the time of year when corporations really begin to get a clear handle on how the year will wrap up for them. This is why October is a month when earnings surprises can contribute mightily to short term market direction. Remember, although Octobers can be volatile, it also marks the start of the seasonally favorable period for the market from October to April.

So judging from the current S&P 500 chart, we are likely at a turning point soon with this current triangle formation. Symmetrical Triangle formations of this sort normally resolve strongly in one direction or the other. Supply and Demand during these periods tend to be battling for leadership. Thus our current up and down market landscape.  In the meantime, until resolution one way or another, I remain optimistic as the major trends remain intact to the upside at this time.
Many of you are aware of the travails of Wells Fargo of late. You may also be aware that we sold a small position we held as continued new unethical revelations left us no choice. This once thought of leader in the industry is now under intense scrutiny in many areas.

I would suggest that anyone that has had any dealings with Wells Fargo over the past several years review their statements carefully.  There appears to have been numerous compliance failures over many years. Regulators just penalized them $185 million. Bank employees opened literally millions of unauthorized accounts to meet sales goals. Sales quotas of this sort do not serve the best interests of their clients.  It is this exact type of inherent conflict of interest that caused me to seek independence and establish McDonough Capital Management in 1999.

Along these same lines, Deutsche Bank appears close to settling with the DOJ for approximately $5.4 Billion. So shenanigans in the banking sector appear to be nearing epic proportions again.

In the meantime, please don’t hesitate to contact us should you have any questions regarding anything financial. We are here to help. 407-249-9647. And don’t forget about our tax preparation services. We are beginning to gather all the data now for year-end tax planning for all of our tax clients.
