Early season treks

Now that the snow is disappearing from the lower elevations, Sandpoint is once again a walking town! Stretch your legs with these early spring outings:
- Pend d'Oreille Bay Trail: This waterfront trail along the Lake Pend Oreille shoreline is accessed right in town, with a total distance of 3 miles up and back. To get to the trailhead, turn left on Sandpoint Ave. (before Edgewater Resort), to the parking area.
Mineral Point Interpretive Trail: Lower elevation 2.1-mile hike, pictured, contours along Lake Pend Oreille, about 14 miles south of Sandpoint near Garfield Bay, with magnificent views across the lake to the Monarchs.

$50,000 is swimming in Lake Pend Oreille

Fifty walleye tagged to promote fishing

Idaho Fish and Game has tagged 50 walleye in Lake Pend Oreille - and anglers who catch one can turn it in for $1,000. In addition, non-tagged walleye can be turned in for a chance at winning the drawing of $100. It's all part of an effort to reduce the surging walleye population that could be threatening the lake's kokanee. The walleye were released March 1, so get fishing!

Another fishing event coming up is the K&K Spring Fishing Derby, put on by the Lake Pend Oreille Idaho Club April 27-May 5. For more information, check out
