In this second year of the UN Decade on Afrodescendant people, #HerDreamDeferred is a virtual town hall series dedicated to elevating issues confronting Black women and girls that are often cast into the shadows of public concern. Each day from March 28-April 1, we will host an online event to highlight a specific set of challenge facing Black women, girls, and other women of color. The series features prominent racial and gender justice leaders, including Jamilah Lemieux, Kiese Laymon, Heidi Hartmann, Barbara Arnwine, Luke Harris, Monique Morris, Jaribu Hill, Anu Bhagwati, and many more.
This year’s series occurs at a political moment when politicians and stakeholders across the country are paying unprecedented attention to the experiences of women and girls of color. Black women leaders in Congress announced the creation of the Caucus on Black Women and Girls and for the second year, Senator Gillibrand has designated the last week of March as “Black Women’s History Week.” AAPF is honored to contribute to the broadening scope of social concern. Our goal is to catalyze public will to develop an inclusive social justice agenda that leaves no one behind.
#HerDreamDeferred is held in partnership with the Transformative Justice Coalition, National NOW, One Billion Rising, Black Lives Matter LA, Black Women’s Blueprint, Institute for Women’s Policy Research, the American Association of University Women, Planned Parenthood, YWCA, Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting, Girls Justice League, and other leading gender and racial justice organizations.
About the AfricanAmericanPolicyForum Founded in 1996, AAPF was developed as part of an ongoing effort to promote women’s rights in the context of struggles for racial equality. It serves as an information clearinghouse that works to bridge the gap between scholarly research and public debates on questions of inequality, discrimination and injustice.
