  • This year 367 images were entered in 6 categories.
  • The category with the most images entered was landscapes.
  • There are 3 rounds of judging, the first 2 individually online and the final together from the finished prints selected to hang.  In order to assure there is never any favoritism our judges never know the names of the photographers or the titles of the images during their deliberations. They make their selections based solely on the visual impact of the images.
  • The number of images the Judges narrowed down to this year was 234 and those images were rated.
  • We are able to hang 181 images in the space at Angelo's Hall so the top rated images are what you see.
  • The Judges view the 181 images in person and make their selections for prizes. There is always a lot of discussion. We hope to share some of that discussion with you at the Virtual Reception.
  • The committee is excited to again be able to share the show with local students from Columbia Elementary School, Sonora High School and Columbia College. A valuable lesson in gallery etiquette, photography composition and refining their observational skills while doing a fun scavenger hunt.

Located in the heart of the California Mother Lode, Angelo's Hall is in the center of Columbia State Historic Park, a living gold rush town featuring the largest single collection of existing gold rush-era structures in the state. Visiting Columbia is like traveling back in time to the sights, smells, and sounds of a nineteenth century mining town—merchants dressed in 1850’s attire, a whiff of coal smoke from the blacksmith shop, and the rumble of a stagecoach pulling into town! Spend the day enjoying fun activities for the whole family. Pan for gold, explore exhibits, ride the stagecoach, discover unique shops, and learn about the rich history of the California gold rush on a guided town tour.

Columbia’s streets are lined with a variety of shops and boutiques with many specializing in nineteenth century goods. Restaurants, ice cream parlors, candy stores, saloons, and a tea house stand ready to quench your thirst, satisfy a sweet tooth, and fill your appetite. Be sure to enjoy a cold bottle of locally made Sarsaparilla to get a taste of the old west and then head over to the portrait studio and dress up for an old-time photo. Visit a working blacksmith shop where you can watch iron being skillfully forged into finished goods through fire, water, and shaping on an anvil. You can also buy a personalized horseshoe souvenir!

Conveniently located off of Highway 49, Columbia is an easy and scenic drive that neighbors other historic towns in the Sierra Nevada foothills including Sonora, Jamestown, and Angels Camp making it a popular destination for day-trippers and weekenders alike. Columbia is also easy on the budget with free admission, free parking, and free guided tours of the town by docents. You can even bowl for free in an antique bowling alley next to the museum! Enjoy a packed lunch at one of the many picnic tables and barbecue grills around the park.

With so much to see and do in the area, why not plan an overnight stay for a relaxing and unhurried visit? Several affordable lodging options are available in town including hotels, cottages, cabins, and campgrounds for RV’s and tents.Come discover Columbia, “Gem of the Southern Mines”, and explore the rich history of this charming California Gold Rush town. Businesses and park exhibits are open year-round, seven days a week.

We have provided information on our website to help you plan your next trip to Columbia.  We look forward to seeing you soon!

This event takes considerable effort to set up and break down each year, and it’s all done with volunteer help. We would like to personally invite you to assist us for a few hours at Angelo’s Hall (within the Columbia State Park).  One advantage is that you get to see the show before the general public does, while meeting other photo enthusiasts!

Here are the dates available and the job descriptions:

Friday, March 4, 9:00 am to 1:00 pm:  Transport the portable display panels in place at the hall and attach and arrange the ceiling lights.  This would require a little muscle to carry the 15 pound panels from the storage shed to the hall, and some agility plugging the lights into the ceiling receptacles while on a 6’ ladder.  We may complete this task by 12:00 depending on the amount of help available.

Friday & Saturday March 4 and 5, 12:00 pm – 5 pm and 9:00 am - Noon: Receive the accepted framed entries, and ensure that the photograph and title matches the registration.  This would require carrying the framed entries to the perimeter of the hall according to the specific category.

Sunday, March 20, 3:00 pm – 5:30 pm:  Each artist picks up their entries while the display panels and lights are taken apart and stored off site.   Again, this process may be streamlined depending on the help available.

Please respond directly to me,, for more information and to sign up.  I look forward to hearing from you.
Thank you,
