As the school year winds down, we wanted to update you on some of the design and construction projects happening throughout the district. The planning for the Academies of Shakopee is moving along. A number of staff and community teams have been working on details for the expanded high school that will open in fall 2018, including how to implement the Academies of Shakopee. We have been meeting with our secondary staff to answer questions and provide them with the latest planning information. In these early stages of planning, we are working to determine things like scheduling, teaming and staff interests.
This summer we will begin to write the Master Plan. What is the Master Plan? The Master Plan is the prescriptive way we will get to the academy model. Teachers, community members, school administration and staff will come together to help write the plan. We are looking forward to the planning process and we will continue to engage staff, our business partners and community members.
Last week, the district's scheduling team, comprised of counselors, assistant principals and head principals, met to discuss the master scheduling model and examined which could work best with the academies model. The Academies of Shakopee Ford Next Generation Learning Steering Committee also met last week. The committee heard a presentation from Tim O'Neill from the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED). He talked about current employment and career data. The committee further explored occupations in demand and how that data is relevant to the academies model.
Another important part of planning will be happening at our middle level within the junior highs. In order to ease our enrollment crunch, Pearson 6th Grade Center will transition back to an elementary school in the fall of 2018. A group of teachers, staff and district leadership have been gathered to look specifically at the middle school and focus on the philosophy, curriculum, and overall transitional experience of each student to ensure a smooth and successful transition to the middle years. This group has convened for the summer, but will begin to meet again in the fall. Click here to learn more about the Middle School Core Planning Group.
On Friday, September 9th, 2016 the Sabers will take the field for the first football game on the newly renovated and updated Vaughan Field. The district will be hosting a grand opening event and ribbon cutting. There will be music, food tents, games and other fun activities. Mark your calendar and bring the whole family! Additional details will be coming soon!
Shakopee High School
On Monday, June 13, 2016, we will officially break ground on the expansion of Shakopee High School. You will start to notice a construction presence at the high school soon as crews begin to prepare the site for construction. Like we have with Vaughan Field construction, we will update our website weekly once construction begins.
Please remember that our 2016-17 school calendar starts earlier than in year's past. Important dates to remember are August 22, 2016 (first day of school) and May 25, 2017 (last day of school). Click here to download the entire school year.
I want to take a moment to say thank you to our parents/guardians, staff, teachers and students for a fantastic year. Thank you for all that you do to make Shakopee Public Schools a great place to learn!
