Festive family fun

Hello again from the team who sent you your Family Flavours cookbook.

As promised, we're getting back in touch for Christmas to share recipes, crafts and more for you and your family to enjoy over the holidays.

Christmas can quickly turn into a sugar-fest but it doesn't need to. We have 4 recipes for you to try, all created by expert nutritionists:

  1. Fro-yo bars (recipe online): put away the tin of chocolates and pack up these bars for a Boxing Day walk.
  2. Mediterranean pasta bake (recipe PDF): a quick, nutrient-packed supper for all the family.
  3. Root veg wedges (recipe PDF): parsnips aren't just for Christmas Day! Swap out the crisps and offer these healthy snacks for when you settle down to watch a family film.
  4. Apple sandwiches: so easy to make that you don't need a recipe! Simply slice an apple into circles, not going over the core. Use a cookie cutter to cut a festive shape in the centre of the apple slices. Spread a thin layer of nut butter on one side and stick the slices together.

Encourage children to help you make these recipes. Learning to cook is proven to help kids develop lifelong healthy eating habits.

Clockwise from top left: chocolate and orange frozen yoghurt bars, Mediterranean vegetable pasta bake, apple sandwiches, root vegetable wedges.

Wrap up, head out!

Did you know that children should be active for at least an hour a day, and break up time spent sitting or lying down?

Our website has ideas for outdoor activities to keep everyone moving, so wrap up warm and head out!

And when you get home, try these activities:

  • Colour in a card for a neighbour (why not save the postie a job and walk to their house to deliver it?)
  • Make potato print wrapping paper
  • Design fitness place mats for guests, with a name and an activity (10 star jumps for Uncle Matt?)
  • Create a marble obstacle course – use plastic cups and bottles, cardboard tubes or whatever you have handy to create an obstacle course for a marble.
  • Eat Move Learn jigsaw – our online jigsaws have timers so why not complete as much as you can in 5 minutes then have a screen break and return to it the next day?

What do you think?
