News from our club...

This term we’ve continued to run MTV Youth from two sites – outdoor sports from St Mary’s school and indoor activities from Hampton Baptist church. Our numbers have been growing each week and we’ve peaked at 67 either doing outdoor sports at St Mary’s School or indoor games, crafts and cooking at Hampton Baptist Church.

Winners at the Cut Films Awards 2017

Our collaboration with Cut Films has resulted in our young people making a short film designed to encourage their friends not to smoke and can be found on the following link http://competition.cutfilms.org/search?q=It+all+starts.
This was a fantastic project that saw our young people learn lots of gruesome facts about smoking. They then thought of an idea, and filmed and edited this to make their film. The young people collaborated brilliantly as a team and learnt lots of new skills in the process.
This film was entered into a competition. Our young people saw their film screened, alongside others at a regional event at the Odeon Richmond on 14 June. We were delighted and proud that the film won two awards. The awards were for ‘Overall Popular Choice’ and second place in the 12-15 category. Furthermore our young people spoke at the event. They are now invited to a national screening of their film at the Curzon Soho in early July.

Jack Petchey Awards

MTV Youth has been able to make Jack Petchey awards to some very deserving young people. Our most recent awards have gone to two of our young leaders Markos and Jessica. The picture on the left features Ellie and Hannah’s trip to ‘High Ropes’.

Fundraising

It is at this time of year that we review our work and apply to the Hampton Fuel Allotment Charity for our core funding. We are always enormously grateful for this support to our project. We would also like to record special thanks to the Hampton and Hampton Hill Philanthropic Society who have been a wonderful supporter of the club ever since we began six years ago. Each year they have given generously to the club so much so that they are now winding up and have donated us their last £130!
More practically, sixteen young people and seven adult volunteers spent a Saturday morning in May washing cars to raise funds. Our thanks to Hampton Methodist church for donating their venue and everyone who support the event which raised £260.
We’d love to thank all of you who help sustain our club through the supporters club. To try and grow our supporters at the games night we invited everyone who supported the club to try and find one other person who could do too. Governance update
This month we are very pleased to welcome the new Vicar at St Mary’s Church – Rev'd Ben Lovell, who joins our group. Trustees continue to work to secure the project its own base in Oldfield Road. We are now in the closing stages, and are commissioning various surveys before the lease is finally signed. Then there's building work and considerable amount of decorating to be done. But the future is becoming more promising!

What our young people say

Our annual club survey gave us some great feedback. The young people conclusively commented that their lives were better for coming to the club. It gave them a chance to meet existing friends and to make new friends, learn new things and have something to look forward to on a Friday night. When asked about what they had learnt from coming to the club they recorded a mixture of skills such as sewing, knitting, science and filming as well as talking about respect, kindness, reconciling with friends they’d fallen out with and having more confidence in talking to people.
