Celebrating five years of MTV Youth

MTV Youth, Hampton celebrated 5 years of the Friday night youth club at the last club of term in July. Over 100 young people, parents, volunteers and members of the community sang Happy Birthday at the party. During the evening Dr Tania Mathias MP presented four young people with the sought after Jack Petchey Achievement Awards. The annual awards, which celebrate the positive contributions made by our young people, were handed out by the Deputy Mayor, Cllr Kate Howard.

Residential and Young Leaders

We are delighted that eleven of our club members have accepted the invitation to become Young Leaders at MTV Youth. They will work alongside our four Senior Young Leaders who are continuing in their leadership roles. As part of their induction and on-going training, eleven out of the fifteen Young Leaders attended a weekend residential at Hindleap Warren in Sussex where they enjoyed a number of activities designed to help them bond as a group and work well as a team. Our Young Leaders are a great addition to our club, helping with the setting up and packing away, assisting with activities and promoting good behaviour with the younger children.
New Trustee for our charity
We welcome local resident, Chris Thompson to our Board of Trustees this term. Chris has substantial experience in financial control and project planning and we welcome him and his expertise as the club plans for the future.
Youth Support Worker Role

We welcome Natalie Blades to our team in the youth support worker role. This 6 hour a week paid post helps support the club with admin tasks and youth work on Friday nights. Natalie supported the residential trip where she greatly enjoyed getting to know the new young leaders and has already proved to be a wonderful asset to the club. Natalie says ‘I am thoroughly enjoying my time as Youth Support Worker for MTV Youth. The Young People have been so welcoming and are a real inspiration’.

Working together and supporting the community

As well as running our Friday night club, MTV Youth works behind the scenes to give extra mid-week mentoring support to those who need it and to develop partnerships to increase youth work support. We have been delighted therefore to:

1)      Support Hampton High’s community open event on 17 September

2)      Work with Hampton Rangers FC, who have been providing work opportunities for
some of our older teens (past club members that we are still in touch with).

3)      Enabling young people to take part in a focus group conducted by Rocket
Science Ltd on behalf of Hampton Fuel Allotment Charity, which sought to
establish what it is like living in the borough and whether the needs of the
       local community are being met.

Our future

As St Mary’s Primary school grows each year, there is less space available for MTV’s use within the building. For the first half of term we used the school hall and outdoor space but it is no longer possible to use the school on a weekly basis.

As a club we are committed to try and find a long term solution on this site. While various options are being explored we have made some contingency arrangements to keep the club going – please see the information that we have sent out to parents below.  We would like to send a massive thank you to the club’s volunteers who will cover two  sites to make this work and we hope that the young people will cope well with the changes.

CHANGE FOR MTV YOUTH after half term

Please note we are still working to secure a long term venue for MTV Youth on the St Mary’s School site, but we are unable to use the school hall this half term. Dates include 4,11,18,25 November and 2,9,16 December 2016.
During this period we intend to run MTV Youth from two sites. The club will run at the usual time on Friday nights between 7pm-8.30pm on both sites but children will need to remain on the site they choose for the whole time. Parental consent forms still need to be completed for new children and registers to sign children in and out will be taken on both sites.
