August at Driver's Market

Whether you’re having a dinner party or picnic this month, Driver’s has everything you need for a memorable summer feast. On August 30, poet and Driver’s co-owner Paul Geffner joins us Around the Table for a poetry reading. And in Insight, see what physician Sarah Janssen had to say about sunscreen safety at her talk in June.

AROUND THE TABLE AT DRIVER'S

Second Chances: Paul Geffner reads a selection of favorite poems -- his own and others

Thursday, August 30 at 7 pm

Poetry surrounds us, making us realize the slimness of the membrane between internal and external worlds. In his book, Your Personal America, Sausalito poet Paul Geffner explores the America familiar to so many of us, as well as territory new and uncharted.  Along the way he saves Christmas, kills the Easter Bunny, and contemplates why dinosaurs speak English in cartoons. Admission is free, but space is limited. Be sure to RSVP.

Paul was born in New York City.  He spent most of his childhood under a school desk in anticipation of a nuclear war.  He now lives in Sausalito and is a part owner of Driver's Market with the Driver family.  He is enduring a bad hair lifetime.

Attendees will receive a 10% discount at Driver’s during the event.

MARKET SPOTLIGHT

Sonoma Coast seaweed

Strong Arm Farm's edible seaweed varieties hail from the cold waters of the rugged Sonoma coastline. Founder Heidi Herrmann harvests seaweed on June and July low tides, and dries it for year-round availability. The collected algae are triple-rinsed and dried on screens in the sun. Driver’s carries Strong Arm Farm’s kombu, wakame, and bladderwrack -- a variety used by herbalists for thyroid support.

Japanese condiments

From Japan brings a line of high quality, natural Japanese seasonings to American tables. Their Furikake adds crunch and flavor when sprinkled on grilled meat or rice, and contains only plant-based ingredients and no artificial flavors. And their Hot Yuzu Sauce, made with the unique Japanese citrus, provides a distinctive and unusual flavor in cooking or as a condiment.

DRIVER’S INSIGHTS

Event Recap - How to choose a safer sunscreen for yourself and the planet with Sarah Janssen, MD

Sunscreens contain dozens of chemicals to protect our skin from damaging sun rays. Unfortunately, many of these chemicals are also linked to harmful health effects such as endocrine disruption and cancer. Other chemicals in sunscreens are toxic to coral reefs. Earlier this summer, physician and researcher Sarah Janssen joined us to discuss sunscreen safety and sun protection.
