Keep an eye on our produce selection this month as late summer varieties transition to early fall offerings. On September 27, we will eat well Around the Table when local food writer Vanessa Chang hosts a special salumi tasting class. And in Insight, read an excerpt from Paul Geffner's book of poetry.

Intro to Charcuterie with Vanessa Chang

Thursday, September 27 at 7 pm; $20 per person

You say salami, they say salumi. With a growing food culture and more food lovers, there's never been a better time to enjoy the world of cured meats. This class is a delicious exploration of what is sometimes known as "charcuterie" and an introduction to some of the country's leading artisans.


At this event you will: taste a range of artisanal salumi and charcuterie; learn about the art of cured meats; have fun and eat well.

Vanessa Chang is a food writer and educator with a special love for cured meats and cheese. She is a Certified Cheese Professional and has worked in the food industry for over a decade in education and marketing. When not waxing poetic and training trade on nuances of food, she is often playing outside, fueled by slices of prosciutto.

 

MARKET SPOTLIGHT

Pepper...

 

On Bertil Åkesson’s family plantations in Madagascar, pepper trees grow alongside the cacao that he is renowned for. The shady pepper trees protect the cacao beans from direct sunlight, and impart a distinctive peppery flavor to Åkesson’s chocolate. Bertil’s father, a Swedish diplomat, established plantations in Madagascar in the 1970’s and started trading cacao and spices. Åkesson’s exotic pepper varieties, including the remarkable Indonesian long pepper, are now available at Driver’s.

& Salt

 

Marty Jacobsen and Janet Brown launched Allstar Organics in 1994 when they planted heirloom tomatoes in a field next to their home in Lagunitas. Today, that field is bursting with herbs, aromatics and edible flowers that Janet blends with French sea salt to produce a line of herbal cooking salts. Marty and Janet also farm land in Nicasio and Petaluma where they grow organic produce, including specialty varieties for local chefs.
