Troy Ruffels: Between Fire and Flood 2017 Solo Commission
Exhibition dates: 2 September – 22 October 2017
Each year the Devonport Regional Gallery presents an exhibition of works by a mid-career Tasmanian artist. The 2017 Solo Commission was awarded to North West artist Troy Ruffelsand provided him with support to research and create a new body of work.
Working with photography, video and digital media Troy has produced a poignant body of work for this commission that references the recent extreme weather events experienced here on the North West Coast, including the fires of summer 2016 and the floods that followed that winter, and explores our relationship to the world through landscape, and our contemporary concerns about climate, nature and culture. On entering the exhibition viewers will be given the opportunity to enter a world where landscape is used as a subject through which to navigate emotional states of being and our relationship to the environment at large. The Gallery young members, the Droogs, have been busy working with artist Megan Walch in designing a new mural for Rooke Lane. The second design workshop held on Saturday 26 August concluded with members finalising the design based on the Robinson Studio interior. The site for the new mural will be in Rooke Lane on the back wall of Rooke Street Mall's Mensland and Eyelines stores, of which the Robinson Photographic Studio was once located. The installation will take place later in September.
BEHIND THE SCENES
This month's blog post features the work of Tasmanian printmaker Michael Schlitz.
"Schlitz is an artist whose lifestyle, practice and artworks each sensitively engage with ideas about our relationship with nature. As with many Tasmanian artists held in the DCC Permanent Collection, Schlitz explores the natural environment through his work, however his approach is distinctly holistic. The artist lives and works in relative seclusion, and often without luxuries such as electricity and running water, and the influence of this sustainable, low impact lifestyle is evident in his work..."
Set in the Gallery, Art Spark offers a unique experience for Primary and Secondary students wishing to further their creative thinking, and develop an appreciation of the visual arts. The workshops are presented by a practising artist, Jessie Pangas, who is able to bring out each participant’s unique style and interests.
