Board Member Spotlight

Texas A&M School of Public Health Alumni Board member Amy Lavery, PhD, MSPH, has been selected as an Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) Officer by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  Lavery is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and will begin the 2-year training program in applied epidemiology July 2017.

Annually, 70 to 80 EIS officers are selected from among hundreds of physicians, doctoral-level scientists, veterinarians and other health professionals for this highly competitive fellowship program. Known as the CDC’s disease detectives, EIS officers identify causes of disease outbreaks, recommend prevention and control measures, and implement strategies to protect people from injury, disability, illness and death both in the U.S. and worldwide.

2016 APHA Denver Convention

Our new Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, Amy Fairchild, PhD, met Alums Wei-Chen Lee, PhD, and Julie St. John, DrPH, during APHA research poster presentations. Wei-Chen is currently a Research Associate at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, TX, and her research on the health of rural vs. urban moms was highlighted recently in the Houston Chronicle.  Julie is an assistant professor and associate department chair in the Department of Public Health in the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at Texas Tech University Health Science Center, where she recently received the President's Excellence in Community Engagement Award.  For picture highlights of other alums, faculty and staff at APHA, see Facebook.

Alumni Board of Directors’ Election

Are you interested in serving a 2-year term on the school’s Alumni Board of Directors?  You would be joining existing board members whose terms have not ended.  All who graduate from our school are automatically members of the SPH alumni association with no dues required.  However, Board of Director requirements include donating each year an alum is on the board either $50, $100 or $150 (depending on ability to give), and attending in person or by conference call 2 of 3 meetings annually. If you are interested in running for a board position, please send a headshot and a short bio by
Feb. 3 to rlmitchell@sph.tamhsc.edu.

Congratulations to our Fall Graduates

including our first bachelor’s in public health graduate, Lisa Strauss (pictured with her family)! A reception was held in their honor at the school in December. To view more photos of this event and graduation, see the album on Facebook.
Do you know a successful alum that deserves recognition?
Nominate them by April 1 to receive the annual Distinguished Alumni Award at a special event hosted by the school.
