Indigenous Performing Arts Alliance

Autumn on Turtle Island is Spring in Australia

Executive Director Message by Cole Alvis

Taanishi, IPAA members and allies

Merindah Donnelly (Koori) and Alison Murphy-Oates (Ngiyampaa Wailwan & Darkinjung) invited me to speak at the National Indigenous Theatre Forum (September 17 - 19, 2015) in Brisbane, Australia.

You can read about my time at this gathering here and check out a brief video that documents the launch of the Blackfulla Performance Alliance in Australia!

There is a more comprehensive video (90 mins) of Indigenous leaders speaking about protocol in their practice as well as another brief video where artists speak to the necessity of exchanging knowledge in Indigenous performance.

Take note of the "deadly" land acknowledgement at the beginning of these videos. Would like to see more of that on Turtle Island!

Over 70 leading Indigenous artists from Australia and Aotearoa (New Zeland) were present for the National Indigenous Theatre Forum during the Brisbane Festival.

Some of these leaders attended the
Indigenous Performance Symposium during the performance marketplace called Western Arts Alliance hosted in Vancouver, BC (September 1st, 2015).

Tim Wilson is the Executive Director of the Western Arts Alliance and his collaboration with the global Indigenous advisory assembled for this gathering kept Indigenous performance and protocols at the centre of the conversation.
