I am pleased to announce my new Travel Sketching Distance Learning Course is now available. This is the most comprehensive course of its kind, and has more information than any book or course available.

It offers step by step demonstrations, lots of examples and information, and assignments to complete and return to me for a critique, comments and suggestions.

What have I been doing since the last Newsletter?

May 2014 –Savusavu Fiji
It is a delight to return to the idyllic island of Vanua Levu, an unspoiled paradise with very little commercialism,  few tourists, and a very laid back existence. I combine my workshops and on location tutoring with a holiday for my group. You can do as little or as much as you like, and you will also arrive home with an abundance of knowledge, a sketchbook with wonderful memories of your time away, and have made new friends.

Late July-August – UK & Venice
I did a side trip to Venice (one of my favourite places) from London. The sketching opportunities become quite addictive so I recommend you go with a friend or partner that:
a) likes sketching - b) likes photography c) likes reading (to do while you are sketching) and d) is patient.

It is often necessary to sketch from photographs once you return from a holiday, as time seems so limited, and there is so much to see and do when in a different place.

Rule of Thirds
The rule of thirds is a guide for a well balanced composition in your sketch. Divide your sketching areas into thirds. The intersecting lines are where the areas of interest work best.

Think about having 1/3 sketch for sky and 2/3 for water and land or vice versa.

September - Bali
How I love Bali! The scenery can be breathtaking and the Balinese village life has unchanged little for centuries, especially further out from the commercial areas.

The Balinese are very gentle and friendly people, with religion paying a large part in their lives.

This was a reconnaissance trip to discover some new and exciting locations. I have been going for five years and was looking for a few different locations to sketch, off the beaten track.
Where to next?
In three weeks I will be going to India for my first visit and to do lots of sketching. This is a treat for my Christmas holiday. I am very excited as I have been wanting to go for many years.  So for my next Newsletter, expect to see some sketches of my Indian soujourn.
