A Toast to Thankfulness
Every Thanksgiving we either privately reflect or publicly acknowledge (meaning, whoever we dine with on this Turkey Day) what we are thankful for. My list could go on for days, but I won’t bore you with that.
I’ve been exploring this idea of thankfulness, what it is, and how we express it. My etymological dictionary was not much help but a standard dictionary listed an “expression of gratitude” as a definition. I like that.
Expression of gratitude to who or whom? Being grateful and giving thanks seem to be directed at a power greater than ourselves. At least once a day in this abundant life, we can surely think of something to be thankful for. And with that, I offer a Thanksgiving toast.
Here’s to being thankful today and every day of the year!
Autumn is always a conflicted time for me. My garden tells me what needs to be done every day to prepare for the onset of winter and the fall leaves beckon me to get out and shoot. I've been very fortunate to gain access to some public trust lands to make photographs. Now that hunting season is on, I've taken a break from my shooting so hunters can do their shooting. During the last weekend in October, I went down to Pine Mountain to participate in PhotoScenic Kentucky. It was a great experience and I highly recommend it for landscape photographers from beginners to seasoned professionals. The organizers (many of them ex-Courier Journal photographers) gave workshops on various topics but the best part was the homework. On Friday evening, we were charged with making close-up, backlit and scenic images. On Saturday afternoon we submitted two images of each category on a thumb drive. The culminating event was a slide show of all the participants photographs. It was a joy to meet so many wonderful people with a passion for photography.

Even though I call this section of the newsletter “in my garden,” it is actually OUR garden. My wife and I share the work and the joy together. I’m happy to share my current garden photo journal entries with you in each edition of Edz Buzz.
