BBCSS Transitions

It is time to extend our sincerest gratitude to departing members of the Board on Behavioral, Cognitive, and Sensory Sciences.

John Cacioppo will have served as Chair of BBCSS for three years at the end of this calendar year.  We thank him for his leadership and service during this time, especially noting his work on strategic planning for the Board's continued intellectual growth.

Additionally, we say farewell to Alice Eagly and Richard Bonnie who have provided important insights and help during their time on the board.  All three will be sorely missed and we extend our sincere wishes for their continued success.

How People Learn 2

The Board on Behavioral, Cognitive, and Sensory Sciences (BBCSS) and the Board on Science Education (BOSE) are pleased to announce a new study titled "How People Learn II: The Science and Practice of Learning." We are in the process of appointing a new ad hoc committee to conduct the study and prepare a report that will update and extend the 2005 NRC report How People Lean, by reviewing and synthesizing research that has emerged across the various disciplines that focus on the study of learning from birth through adulthood in both formal and informal settings.

Did You Know?

If you had attended the BBCSS Open Session you would have learned...
  • Even with all of their training in radiology or airport security or satellite surveillance, experts use the same visual search engine that the rest of us use and they are subject to the same cognitive, perceptual, and attentional limits as we are.
  • The National Cancer Institute is trying to encourage behavioral scientists to submit grant applications in the areas of sun safety and HPV vaccination.
  • The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation hopes to increase economic opportunity for all students through its deeper learning initiative where scientists and organizations can apply for grants.
