NI at Big Bang Event

A team of enthusiastic volunteers led by YGN member Mark Gardiner attended the recent Big Bang Fair in Birmingham.

The team of 24 spent 4 days encouraging young people aged 7-19 to get involved in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM).

The ‘Nuclear Zone’ hosted EDF Energy, Sellafield Ltd, ECITB, Horizons, NIA and NNL where a collaborative approach was used to encourage ‘Nuclear’ STEM. From ROVs and Robosapiens to thermal imaging cameras, the NI stand was constantly busy, attracting many of the 70,000 visitors the fair has each year.

Part of the NI’s charitable objectives is outreach, and without the support of our members, we wouldn’t be able to take part in such valuable, important activities like the Big Bang Fair.

GET INVOLVED

Euratom & Brexit

The NI has formalised its response and advice to HM Government on the safeguards that need to be in place in advance of the UK's exit from EURATOM. A small working group has collated the comments and feedback from members into a document which we have now shared with relevant Government officials and wider stakeholders. Members are also welcome to read the response here.

There is still time to have your say into the impact of Brexit and the EURATOM withdrawal - here's a couple of ways to make your views known:

  • Contribute to a survey by Prof Susan Molyneux-Hodgson of the University of Exeter on the topic of EURATOM here. The survey seeks to map out the range of challenges that may be faced by different groups including industry, regulators, academic researchers as well as understand the diversity of views on the topic.

  • Attend the NI's forthcoming Nuclear Law Seminar on 27 April where you will hear from René McTaggart, Senior Policy Advisor, Energy Market Access from the Department for Exiting the European Union. This is sure to be a lively discussion of the issues that EUROTOM exit will force us to confront so it's definitely not one to miss. Other topics to be covered in this one day seminar include regulation, security, planning policy and development consent, project financing, construction contracts and risk management and JVs. With six keynote presentations and four breakout sessions followed by social networking at a local hostelry, this Central London event is a must for Legal and Compliance professionals throughout the nuclear industry.

CEO Blog - One month in

Just over a month into my role as CEO and I feel privileged to already have had such an enticing peek into the nuclear industry. I wanted to share with you some of those experiences and how they link to my hopes for the NI.

In my first few days I attended an informative event that included presentations on the plans and activities at three key development sites – Hinkley, Wylfa and Moorside and met some of the key players. I’ve also been lucky enough to visit Culham Centre for Fusion Energy (CCFE) and see the unique Jet Tokamak and Mast Upgrade, which reminded me what a hi-tech and valuable industry this is to the UK and to our low carbon future.

Secondly I have had the opportunity to meet with some of our industry partners like the NIA and NSAN which has helped me to understand the importance of collaboration with specialist bodies that have nuclear as their primary focus. It is an approach which is typified by the NI’s Board of Trustees and the wider group of volunteers and their networks that make up the nuclear ‘family’. I have been immediately impressed by the level of passion and dedication that NI members have for the industry and its people.
