Knowledge, Attitude and Skills Leadership Meeting!
K.A.S. Leadership Class
The Knowledge, Attitude and Skills (K.A.S.) Leadership Class at Coastline is part of the Asian American Pacific Islander Program for Advancing Completion and Transfer (APACT). This organization helps build students confidence to become empowered student leaders at Coastline.

During the K.A.S. Leadership class, various themes are explored that pertain to understanding leadership. The students explore different ways of becoming student leaders through developing their knowledge, attitudes and skills. Through the K.A.S. Leadership class, students discuss articles, participate in activities and engage in conversation regarding Asian American & Pacific Islander student needs. Coastline currently has five students who are participating in the K.A.S. Leadership class.
"Our student leaders are action oriented individuals working towards positive change on campus," said Louise Fonua, Lead Mentor for APACT, "As student leaders, they are actively involved on-campus and in the local community."
If students are interested in participating in the K.A.S. Leadership class, they can email the APACT program at for more information about applications.
Cybergirlz Event
Coastline hosted the CyberGirlz event that promoted cybersecurity awareness for middle school and high school girls. The event was sponsored by CyberWatch West and High Technology Crime Investigation Association (HTCIA) and took place at the Garden Grove Center on Saturday, October 8. Girls from the Orange County area, ages 12 to 18, learned cybersecurity through training and hands-on activities at this free event.
Cybersecurity professionals and college students were invited to help engage the girls and help out with the activities. Seven college mentors volunteered for the entire day, including Coastline CST students and Cal Poly students from the Computer Information Systems department. The cybersecurity activities that the girls participated in were computer forensics and a cybersecurity-based game called Capture the Flag (CTF). The cyber professionals from CrowdStrike, NASA JPL, Kroll, Women's Society of Cyberjutsu, Cigital, and Raytheon all shared their academic and professional experiences in round table discussions with the girls to inspire them to pursue a cybersecurity education and career path.
The computer forensics intro training was presented by Tobi West, Coastline Cyber Security Instructor, to help prepare the girls for the forensics activity where they collected digital evidence from the "crime scene" and then followed with a digital hunt for forensic evidence to solve the mystery. With instruction from Irvin Lemus, Coastline Instructor, the girls collected evidence, rooted through the digital evidence to read email, and view images saved by the victim on a flash drive and then completed a forensics report to demonstrate their understanding of the evidence along with the answers to solve the mystery.
The CTF game was played in teams of 5 to answer questions that demonstrate their knowledge of various cybersecurity topics. Computer forensics and personal online safety questions were the foundation questions for this event's CTF. The game's dashboard displays the scores in real time as the teams compete for the most points to win the competition. The combined scores from the two activities determined the highest ranking team, with La Quinta High School of Garden Grove Unified taking the lead for first place.
Coastline looks forward to hosting this event on an annual basis for Orange County middle school and high school girls in the future. Coastline Cyber Security Department will continue to raise awareness about the Cybersecurity Department in creative and fun ways with potential students!
