Coastline Commits to Expand College Access

President  Lori Adrian was honored to have been invited to the College Opportunity Day of Action, sponsored by the White House, on Thursday, Dec 4, 2014. The event, which was held at the Reagan Building auditorium, was attended by about 400 college and university presidents across the United States.  Each was asked to make commitments to one of four areas:  building networks of colleges around completion. Creating K-16 partnerships around college readiness, investing in high school counselors as part of the First Lady's Reach Higher Education initiative, and increasing college graduates in STEM.
The White House Summit on College Opportunity included panel presentations on scaling innovation and speeches by President Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama, and Vice President Joe Biden.  Following the summit, Dr. Adrian met with Mark Matsui, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Community Colleges in the Office of Career, Technical, and Adult Education and Dr. Robert Teranishi, Professor, UCLA.

The College Opportunity Day of Action helps to support the President’s commitment to partner with colleges and universities, business leaders, and nonprofits to support students across the country to help our nation reach its goal of leading the world in college attainment.

So, what is Coastline doing to contribute to this important initiative?
  • Coastline is one of ten Asian Serving Institutions (AANAPISI) comprised of community colleges and universities around the United States that will be working together as a consortium to increase student success.  The initiative is led by Professor Robert Teranishi of UCLA, and includes colleges such as Coastline College, De Anza College, Laney College, University of Hawaii, CSU Fresno, CSU East Bay, Univ of Mass Boston,  to name a few.  The event provided a forum for robust networking.
  • Coastline is working to increase the number of Guaranteed Transfer Agreements (GTA) and Memorandums of Understanding (MOU) with four year colleges and universities to promote student transfer. As part of the ongoing initiative, Coastline has partnered with prominent universities, Penn State, Isenberg UMass Amherst, and the University of Illinois Springfield to deliver online bachelor degrees through the Coastline Learning 1st program.
  • Coastline is also building K-16 partnerships with high schools (both traditional and non-traditional). Some of the upcoming initiatives include Coastline's College Preview Day on February 6th and the Latino Youth Conference in early April.
  • Coastline Community College has also joined in the College Opportunity conversation on via Twitter: #CollegeOpportunity @CoastlineinOC and Facebook: /CoastlineCollege. Check out what Coastline has pledged as part of the ongoing college opportunity commitment.

 Counselors' Breakfast & Mini-Conference

Coastline was joined by 25 high schools and 45 high school counselors on Friday, December 5, 2014 for their 2014 High School Counselors' Breakfast. The morning began with breakfast by Orange Coast College Catering for event staff and the high school counselors, followed by a brief welcome from Vice President of Student Services, Ross Miyashiro.

The event consisted of 12 breakout sessions where counselors could meet and greet faculty who conducted presentations about Coastline programs: Paralegal, Art, Psychology, STAR, Learning 1st, Student Services, Financial Aid, among others.

The breakout sessions were followed by a tour of the Newport Beach Center conducted by Coastline Student Ambassadors. The breakfast concluded with a student panel, in which student ambassadors shared their experiences at Coastline and answered questions from the counselors.

This year the participation of the high school counselors almost doubled compared to the previous year the event was held.

EOPS Santa Claus Event

The Extended Opportunity, Programs, and Services (EOPS) office hosted a holiday surprise for their students' children, ages 12 and under on Friday, December 5, 2014.

More than 30 EOPS students gathered to celebrate the holidays with their children and fellow students. Guests of the event enjoyed lunch and holiday songs sang by Coastline staff members.

During the event, Santa Claus himself came to spread holiday cheer to each child, presenting a gift that each child could take home or open at the event.

Special thanks to Coastline's amazing staff and faculty members from the “CARE-ing for Kids Toy Drive,"  who donated gifts and made it a memorable event for not not only the kids, but the parents as well.

New Coastline Website Update

As Coastline gets closer to its 40th birthday, Coastline Webmaster, Jesse Lawson has been working closely with the faculty, students, staff, and management to develop a new Coastline website.

In preparation of the new website, Lawson has developed a 2014-15 digital branding plan to create a strong presence that will solidify Coastline's competitiveness and resilience in the online learning landscape.
The purpose of the plan is to begin the discussion about necessary steps that departments will need to take before Coastline’s website redesign is launched. The plan provides insight on key findings across the college pertaining to the new website pages, important changes that users will encounter, and website recommendations and best-practices.
It is anticipated that a live, full-time demonstration of the new website design will be available starting January 30, 2015. At the start of the New Year, faculty and staff will have the opportunity to participate in demonstrations that cover several key areas of the new website, including Admissions, Academics, and Counseling services pages.
The website’s goal is to promote student acquisition and foster student retention. It is these areas that have been emphasized during this digital rebranding, and will continue to serve as the focal point of every positive change incorporated into the website.
Coastline's new site will launch in early 2015 with a strong, successful message for Coastline students. The new website is just one of many great new ways Coastline is telling the community that we’re here, we’re ready to prepare future leaders, and we’re the best at what we do.

Here’s to a fresh new look and the same great service for Coastline in 2015!
