Spring Semester 2015

The spring 2015 semester is off to a great start! Enrollments at Coastline Community College are very strong compared to spring 2014. Coastline is up 5.25% in student enrollment (+663), up 8.37% in estimated FTES (+209), and up 6.27% in total enrollments (+1,628). In addition, Coastline's contract education enrollments are very good. On day one of the semester, contract education enrollments are up 15% (+435).

Deputy Undersecretary Mark Mitsui Presents
Federal Legislative Update at Coastline

Coastline President, Dr. Loretta Adrian hosted a special visit with Mark Mitsui, Deputy Undersecretary for Community Colleges, at the Newport Beach Center on Thursday, January 29th.

During the visit, Deputy Undersecretary Mitsui provided a federal legislative update, including President Obama's Community College Promise Initiative. Attendees had the opportunity to participate in a meaningful discussion and addressed any questions they had regarding the update.

CCCD Sister School Presidents, Community College Trustees, student leaders, and Directors of Government Relations from around Orange County attended the event, led by the President of the CCCD Board, Dr. Lorraine Prinsky and Board Clerk Mary Hornbuckle.


Professional Development Opportunities: Nutri-Courses For Faculty

Coastline will be offering a professional development course for all faculty. The course is entitled, "Effective Images Improve Learning" (QUAL550).

Course duration: February 17 through March 2

Coastline is the 4th School in Nation
Designated as Center of Academic Excellence

Coastline Community College is the fourth community college in the nation and the first community college in California designated as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance/Cybersecurity for two year institutions through academic year 2019, by the National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security. This designation represents outstanding institutions that provide leadership in Cybersecurity issues, curriculum, and practice.

As part of this prestigious designation, Coastline will be joining Whatcom Community College as one of the first community colleges in the nation to earn this new National Security Agency and Department of Homeland Security designation. 

Coastline provides students with access to IA/Cybersecurity experts, and has established transfer agreements with 4-year institutions that offer a concentration in IA/Cybersecurity.  

A special congratulations goes out to Dean Nancy Jones for the valuable leadership she brought to the project, particularly in the area of curriculum development.

Coastline Welcomes New Full-Time
Faculty Member In Sociology/Human Services

Nicole Major joined Coastline Community College in January 2015 as a new full-time faculty member in Sociology/Human Services. She received her B.A. from the University of California, Los Angeles in 2006 and her M.A. from California State University, Fullerton in 2007. Nicole began her teaching career at Saddleback Community College in 2007, and has also taught at Palomar Community College and Argosy University.  Nicole’s teaching responsibilities have included Introduction to Sociology, Marriage and the Family, Social Problems, Class, Ethnicity, and Gender, Death and Dying, and Sociology of Aging.  

As adjunct faculty at Saddleback College, Nicole was a member of the Distance Education, Gerontology, Associate Faculty Support, Women’s and Gender Studies, and Foster and Kinship Care Education Committees.  Nicole also assisted with the development and coordination of the Gerontology Certificate Program at Saddleback. In addition, she was actively involved in Service Learning and was the co-faculty advisor for the Sociology Club. Nicole’s teaching and research interests include marriage and family, human services, aging/gerontology, sports, and health.
In addition to her teaching, Nicole was the Program Director for the Saddleback College Foster and Kinship Care Education (FKCE) Program from 2009 to 2014. The FKCE program is a part of the California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office and provides education and support opportunities for current or prospective foster parents and relative caregivers in Orange County to meet state licensing requirements.

Coastline Welcomes New Dean of
Art, Math, and Sciences

Dr. Michelle Priest is the new Dean of Arts, Math and Sciences at the Newport Beach Center. She received her B.S from the University of California, Los Angeles, her M.A. from California State University, Fullerton and her Ed.D. from the University of Southern California.  

Dr. Priest has taught both majors and non-majors biology/oceanography since 1998 and has taught at most of the Community Colleges in the OC area, including Coastline Community College. Further, Dr. Priest has been the Distance Education Coordinator at Los Angeles Valley College, where she oversaw a $1.7 million dollar STEM Grant. 

Most recently, she was the SLO Coordinator and tenured faculty member (Life Sciences) at El Camino Compton Educational Center, in Compton. 

Dr. Priest is an enthusiastic sports fan, focusing on College Football, Angels Baseball, and Ducks Hockey. She currently resides in Anaheim with her husband Kirk and their daughter, Taryn.

Opening Reception

ABSTRACT I elevations 
The opening reception for the Art Gallery's exhibit, ABSTRACT | elevations was held on Friday, January 30th at the Newport Beach Center. 

Art Gallery Curator, David Michael Lee welcomed many guests who were in attendance to see a variety of artists' work, such as Cathy Morehead, Ann Marie Rousseau, Jordan Christian, Randall Zorn, Jane Bauman, Claudia Morales McCain and Ryan Pratt. 

The exhibition will be open to the community until March 13, 2015. 
Gallery Hours: Wednesday through Friday, from 12 PM to 4PM.

Distance Learning

Distance Learning Staff Assistant, Kevin Donahue received a thank you note and gift basket from Dr. Casperite, who is an Academic Teacher, VEP College/Distance Learning Coordinator at the California State Prison (CSP) – Sacramento in Represa. Dr. Casperite works closely with Coastline's Incarcerated students and is in constant communication with the Distance Learning Staff.
