2019 Metro DC Appraisal Conference Recap

Members of the appraisal community came together April 12 at the 2019 Metro DC Appraisal Conference to hear about the latest updates, issues and trends driving the area's real estate market.

Henry J. Goodfriend MCR, Global Lead, Real Estate Transactions, Corporate Global Real Estate for The Estee Lauder Companies opened the conference with the Local Effects of Globalization. His presentation explored the benefits and risks of globalization along with the increasing pressure applied by population growth on all elements of our society including real estate.

Goodfriend was followed by The Appraisal Institute's Director of Government Relations, Bill Garber with an update on the legislative trends framing the area's real estate market and appraisal practices along with the latest news from the Appraisal Institute.

Other sessions included:

Technology Update – MLS with Laurie Egbert who gave us a virtual update and training on Bright MLS.

New Trends in Commercial Report Writing with Lucas Rotter, CEO | Co-Founder, Valcre and Dennis Dull, MAI, Co-Founder & Chief Sales Officer, RealQuantum on cutting-edge developments in report writing technology for commercial appraisers. The discussion was led by Ashton Rowles, MAI, MRICS, Senior Director – Executive Team, Archstone Appraisal Group, Inc.

Federal Tax Update with Ryan McCormick, Senior Vice President & Counsel, Real Estate Roundtable who brought everyone up-to-date on the impact of the recently passed tax reform.

Appraisal Subcommittee Update on state compliance, upgrades and trends for national registries, AMC registration and supervision and temporary waivers from Appraisal Subcommittee Executive Director Jim Park.

Metro DC Development Update session featuring Dr. Stephen S. Fuller, Director, The Stephen S. Fuller Institute and Dwight Schar Faculty Chair and University Professor, The Schar School of Policy and Government at George Mason University and Victor Hoskins, Director, Arlington Economic Development on the details on the Amazon deal and its implications for metro DC real estate. The Amazon session was followed by Northeast Maglev, a preview of the proposed maglev line between Baltimore and Washington DC with David Henley, Project Director, Baltimore Washington Rapid Railand, and a Metro DC Transportation overview of WMATA's real estate development plans by Steve Teitelbaum, Senior Real Estate Advisor - Office of Real Estate and Parking, Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority.

George Mann CRE, National and International Review Appraiser, Mann & Mann, LLC closed out the conference program with an exploration of Long-Term Sustainable Value.

We wrapped up the day with a great reception where members discussed the day's presentations, shared stories and enjoyed an open bar and hors d'oeuvres.
