January Newsletter

Dear Member
Blywyddyn Newydd Dda!  Hope everyone and their families are keeping safe.  We look forward to 2021 and a vaccine programme being implemented to allow plans to be made for a return to being able to travel and meet up again in the not too distant future.

Our online programme has been organised until the end of the summer so have a look at what we have arranged - there are some interesting speakers on a wide range of topics.  Events are posted on our website or you can follow us on Social Media Facebook and Twitter feeds.

Annual General Meeting: Saturday 6 March at 2 pm.
Our Annual General Meeting will also be held on online on 6 March with our international speaker  Darris Williams from Family Search at 3 pm.

Thinking outside the Box - How to find that elusive ancestor with Jeff Coleman
Theme - London Welsh

Our March journal has been collated by members of the London Branch
of the Welsh Family History Societies
If you have any Welsh ancestors who lived in London.

Please send any articles, Help Wanted etc to the Editor before the closing date.

We would also like any relevant photos of London Welsh ancestors
or buildings with a Welsh connection eg Welsh Chapels etc.
General Register Office (Birth & Death) Indexes

The covering dates for the General Register Office Indexes for ordering pdf copies have been extended.

Births 1837-1934 and 1984-2019   These are particularly useful as they include mother's maiden name.

Deaths: 1837-1957 and 1984-2019.  These contain age at death.

There is no facility for ordering pdf marriage certificates.

To search the indexes you will need to set up an account.  General Register Office
pdf Birth and Death certificates currently cost £7 as opposed to £11 for a full certificate.

Wills 1858+

Including Soldiers Wills.  These can be ordered direct and cost £1.50 each
A bargain!

Find a Will  (Probate Search)

There are three sections:
  • 1858-1996
  • 1996-to present
  • Soldier's Wills
Hint 1 - it is not worth ordering an Administration where there is no Will as there will not be any further information included in the Will than that given in the probate summary.
Hint 2 -  Searching is easier if you find out the date of death especially if you have a common surname.  Probate usually, but not always, takes place within a year or so of the death.
Hint 3 - Soldiers Wills - a soldier may have two Wills - check both the Soldier's Wills database and the other database.

Wills are great for identifying siblings and married names especially where you are researching a common surname.   The disappointing ones are those that say - I leave everything to my wife.............  It is not only the rich that left wills - some are for very small amounts.

Have fun!

Standing orders are paid at the beginning of January each year.  If this applies to you please check that your Standing Order has been updated to the current annual subscription rate of £15 for UK and £20 for overseas membership.
Incorrect amounts means additional work for our membership team in chasing and processing payments.  If there is a shortfall it also means that your membership will lapse part way through the membership year.
Your expiry date is shown on the website when you log in under Membership Status and also on your journal envelope.
Once membership lapses we remove personal details from our database, mailing list and website so access to the online resources will also cease at this date.   Once you lapse membership online cannot be 'renewed'.   A new account will need to be set up.
If you need further information about your subscription please contact
If you are receiving this Newsletter you are currently a fully paid up member but if you do not wish to receive further newsletters click 'unsubscribe' at the bottom of the email.

Further restrictions are now in place following the announcement of  English and Welsh  'national and tier lockdowns' - check relevant organisations websites for up to date information about access to documents and online resources.  Many staff are now once again working from home so email queries may not be answered as promptly especially where they do not have access to archive material.

Volunteers Needed - SOCIETY TREASURER

Following the AGM held on Saturday 29 February we are still without a
Society Treasurer.

A small Finance Team is holding the fort by 'paying the bills etc' but as usual it means that the small team on the Executive Committee are having to cover even more roles.

As you will appreciate this is not a situation that can continue for a longer period of time and administration becomes even more difficult when individuals in the small team currently running the Society have personal or family commitments. So if you are able to help share the load and help out with any of the Society's administrative roles please let us know.   Many of the roles can be undertaken by individuals not local to South Wales.
Job Descriptions for Society roles are available on the website - please help share the load!
Since Rootsweb mailing lists became inactive, discussion groups (email lists) for family history have been increasingly using , where some groups have been established for some time. Among them are

If you wish to know whether your cheque has been received you can check on our website where we will have renewed your membership as soon as the cheque is received.  You can also email our Membership Team on
