Dear Member

Welcome to our July Newsletter!

In Welsh July is Gorfennaf and translates to 'end of Summer' and although the days are still long and the nights short as we progress through the month our thoughts will start to turn towards the Autumn.  We have forgotten that August became the 'Summer Holidays' due to the fact that it would have been harvest time in many parts of the country and is for many the start of Autumn - so traditions change and the reasons are forgotten.

We had a fascinating discussion at our last Coffee and Chat about writing up your family history when two of our members described how they go about it.  We hope to repeat this session later in the year as we all learned so much from each other and it helped us to focus on how we intend to pass on how we our stories to the next generation.  This chance to talk to other family historians has been one opportunity provided during the pandemic that we do not intend to lose once we return to face to face meetings.  Our ONLINE TALKS PROGRAMME continues for July before a break during August.  We will return with more talks, brickwall sessions and Coffee and Chat in September.

Our Executive Committee continues to meet online monthly and there is light at the end of the tunnel as some of our branches are currently looking at restarting their face to face meetings.  However this does depend on the individual venue's ability to comply with the current Covid-19 regulations and the size of the room in which the meetings are held.  Our September journal will provide information about their Autumn programmes and when and how the Branch AGMs will be held.

We are currently looking for volunteers to join our Sales and Marketing Team.  Since there have been no face to face fairs for almost two years we need to promote our publications and need volunteers to come forward to take on this role (see advert below for more information).

We are also looking for volunteers to join an online Discussion/Project Group looking at how we can develop the website to include a discussion area and somewhere for members to record their research findings - again see more information below.

The theme for our September issue is 'Women's stories' so let us have those articles, images, snippets by the deadline 20 July.

Hwyl!

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
SALES/MARKETING TEAM

As there are currently no local or national fairs where we can sell our publications we are looking to develop a Sales/Marketing Team to promote our Publications (Booklets, CDs - and shortly downloads).
You will work closely with the Publications Team to identify products that can be promoted in the journal and on the website and via Social Media.
We also ask anyone with local interest and knowledge of a particular parish who can write or provide images to support the promotion of individual products is also asked to contact us so we build up a useful bank of material and contacts.
If you are able to help with any of the above please contact:  website@glamfhs.org.uk
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
WEBSITE DEVELOPMENT/PROJECT GROUP

We are looking for volunteers to join our Website Development Group to meet up online to discuss future developments such as:
adding a discussion area and
how we can get members to be able to share their research findings via the website.
Some Societies get members to fill in an Ancestral/Pedigree File which is uploaded,
others have a forum,
but it might be better to have the material organised around a 'Place' ie members would be able to upload or comment on any research they have done linked to a place.

Just throwing some ideas around at the moment.  Would you be interested in joining our discussion group to take this further?

  If so please contact:  website@glamfhs.org.uk

Volunteers Needed - SOCIETY TREASURER

Following last year's AGM we are still without a
Society Treasurer.

A small Finance Team is holding the fort by 'paying the bills etc' but as usual it means that the small team on the Executive Committee are having to cover even more roles.

We also have vacancies for TWO Trustees to serve on the Executive Committee.

Job Descriptions for Society roles are available on the website - please help share the load!
Groups.io

https://groups.io/g/WLS-Dyfed
and the long-established https://groups.io/g/MonGenes

These are not affiliated to Glamorgan Family History Society but may be helpful to some researchers
