December Newsletter

Dear Member
Here is our final Newsletter for 2020 and what a year it has been.   At the time of writing there seems to be no end yet in sight for a return to 'normal' life with the pandemic continuing to affect our daily lives.

Due to the continuing uncertainty the Executive Committee has decided not to hold a Fair at Merthyr Leisure Centre in 2021.  We felt it would be very difficult to plan and organise our normal event effectively not knowing what restrictions would still be in place.  Athough this is very disappointing for all concerned we considered that the health and safety of our volunteers and members were foremost in making this decision.

However it is not all bad news - our online Extra-Ordinary General Meeting held on Saturday 7 November had the highest number attending that we have seen for decades.  Thank you to our members who joined us and enabled us to formally agree the outstanding amendments to our Constitution.

We shall also be holding our Annual General Meeting online in March 2021 - see notice below.

Our monthly 'talks' are organised by our Cardiff & Vale Branch but are open to all members.  We would also like to start involving our overseas members so if anyone has any ideas about topics you could contribute to these sessions please let us know -  We would love to develop some 'outreach' sessions with our overseas members.  So send us your ideas.   It does not have to be a full 'talk' but could just be a short session about 'Glamorgan/Welsh' resources/links in Australia, New Zealand, Canada or the USA for example.

Members near and far, old and new have joined our successful Coffee and Chat sessions on the third Thursday each month.   Following a request from one of our members, last month we discussed 'family history software'.  The contributions made by members present revealed the vast amount of knowledge and expertise we are now able to share by holding these online meetings.  If anyone has a topic they would like us to discuss on these meetings let us know.

For any of our online sessions you need to book on Eventbrite as some of the sessions have a limited number of spaces.  Links to each online meeting will be included in the Newsletters and are posted in the 'Events' section of our website.

Many organisations are now offering online talks, discussions and other events some of which are listed below - there has never been a better time to catch up on some fascinating topics related to our favourite hobby.

Stay safe!  Cadwch ddiogel!

Nadolig Llawen a Blwyddyn Newydd Dda!

on behalf of Executive Committee

Standing orders are paid at the beginning of January each year.  If this applies to you please check that your Standing Order has been updated to the current annual subscription rate of £15 for UK and £20 for overseas membership.
Incorrect amounts means additional work for our membership team in chasing and processing payments.  If there is a shortfall it also means that your membership will lapse part way through the membership year.
Your expiry date is shown on the website when you log in under Membership Status and also on your journal envelope.
Once membership lapses we remove personal details from our database, mailing list and website so access to the online resources will also cease at this date.   Once you lapse membership online cannot be 'renewed'.   A new account will need to be set up.
If you need further information about your subscription please contact
If you are receiving this Newsletter you are currently a fully paid up member but if you do not wish to receive further newsletters click 'unsubscribe' at the bottom of the email.

Journal 140 December 2020 should be on its way to members and has also been uploaded to the Members Only Area of our website - you will need to log in to view.

Volunteers Needed - SOCIETY TREASURER

Following the AGM held on Saturday 29 February we are still without a
Society Treasurer.

A small Finance Team is holding the fort by 'paying the bills etc' but as usual it means that the small team on the Executive Committee are having to cover even more roles.

As you will appreciate this is not a situation that can continue for a longer period of time and administration becomes even more difficult when individuals in the small team currently running the Society have personal or family commitments. So if you are able to help share the load and help out with any of the Society's administrative roles please let us know.   Many of the roles can be undertaken by individuals not local to South Wales.
Job Descriptions for Society roles are available on the website - please help share the load!
Since Rootsweb mailing lists became inactive, discussion groups (email lists) for family history have been increasingly using , where some groups have been established for some time. Among them are
and the long-established
These are not affiliated to Glamorgan Family History Society but may be helpful to some researchers

Please be aware the due to the current restrictions our volunteers who adminster membership and send out publications are not able to post publications or bank cheques as normal and so we ask you to be patient during this present time.
If you wish to know whether your cheque has been received you can check on our website where we will have renewed your membership as soon as the cheque is received.  You can also email our Membership Team on
