"We have held four meets since the last newsletter with three in July alone. A few home ground winners were seen with Neil Wards ‘Emperor Harada’ winning again at Gosford on the 3rdJuly, Irene Cowells ‘Uncle Sam’ on the 28th which was ridden by local Chris O’Brien and was very good value in the ring, Grant Allard's very impressive ‘Americana Magic’ also wining on the 28th. Grant and his merry bunch of owners have high hopes for this ‘All American’ gelding, so keep an eye out. Then on the 14th August Angela Davies ‘Queen Ablaze’ took out the first at short odds.
This time of year is fairly quiet in terms of racing at Gosford with only 3 races in the space of 13 weeks. This allows us to utilise our course proper for training purposes and give our grass training track a well needed rest.

The recent race meeting of note was our ‘Christmas in July’ which was held on the 28th July. This was the second year that we held this meeting and it proved another huge success. There were over 350 people booked into hospitality packages and over 1,300 people on course. Oddly enough the members still seem to shy away from Saturday racing with more members coming to the track midweek. Speaking with some of our longer standing members they cited “it would be too busy” as a reason for their no show. With our new restrictions on the members lounge entry the room is just as comfortable on a Saturday as it is midweek.

Tony Newing took out the Gosford trainer’s premiership with 13 wins. Tony was mid table most of the year and came storming home in the last couple of months. Congratulations to Tony, his wife Stacey and all his owners and staff.

For the new season there have been wins for Angela Davies, Tony Newing, Greg McFarlane, Adam Duggan, Grant Allard, Luke Hilton and Gil Slattery. Greg McFarlane in particular is on a really good run with six wins already. Given that the premiership was won with thirteen wins last year it shows what an impressive effort Greg’s stable has achieved so far.

There have been some new advancement’s with prizemoney and handicapping coming out of Racing NSW. With regard to handicapping they have tried to make it more enticing to run in Provincial and Metro areas. This is to counter the current migration to Country racing. Thus the highest penalty that a horse will receive winning a Provincial maiden has been lowered which should mean you can win at Gosford and still have a Provincial career. In conjunction with handicapping changes there has also been a $5,000 per race increase to prizemoney in Provincial areas. This means we now race for $35,000 per race. The additional $5,000 spread is weighted towards fourth to tenth placed horses. It may take a little time for these changes to bear fruit but it is a step in the right direction and hopefully we’ll see a return of 10+ field’s at all Provincial meetings in the near future.

We have also slightly modified our carnival format and condensed the three day event into two days. The feature days being Friday 28th December with the running of the $160,000 Group 3 Gosford RSL Belle of the Turf, the $150,000 Gosford Guineas and the $50,000 Class 3 (second heat) of the Class series. Cup day will be held on Thursday 17th January with the $150,000 Gosford Quarries Gosford Gold Cup, $150,000 De Bortoli Wines Takeover Target and the $65,000 class 4 MJ Cusick Stakes. The Board and myself recognise that a Friday Cup day is preferred, unfortunately the decision is not ours. However we will continue to work with the ATC and RNSW to see if we can give Cup Day the placement it deserves.

Our next raceday is on Thursday 4th October which will quickly be followed by three meets in November, four in December and a further three in January.

Membership renewals are now closed, we had a record number of members renewing and we are very close to having to put a hold on memberships. So if you know anyone who wants to become a member I would let them know to get in now before they close off.
Away from racing, we have held some significant events with the ‘Aussie Nightmarkets’ (first Friday of every month), over 5,000 people were in attendance enjoying a multitude of various cuisines. We held another sell out ‘Sydney Comedy Club’ night, the next one is scheduled for Saturday 13th October, plus numerous other conferences, functions and events."

"August saw the continuation of the successful Aussie Nightmarkets which hosted approx. 5,000 people attending on the night. With more food stalls and adjusting the layout of the market a bit worked towards a much more enjoyable night for all in attendance. With the warmer months around the corner, we will be looking to add live music and more bar options which will encourage more people to stay and enjoy the night a bit longer.

TEG also hosted many successful functions throughout August including sporting dinners, mid-week conferences and government body meetings. We also had the Laundy Hotels Raceday which saw a good turnout of Hotel staff and supporters enjoy a great day out watching the races with great feedback coming from the organiser."

Congratulations to trainer, Tony Newing who took out the Gosford trainer’s premiership for 2017/2018 with 13 wins for the season, 5 being at a provincial level. Newing had an outstanding season with a 20% strike rate over his past 50 runners including his well-performed Charge Forward gelding King Lear, who has won six races from only 11 outings.

Congratulations to Tony, his wife Stacey and all his owners and staff.

"Things on the track are starting to look up with the recent much needed rainfall and the onset of some warmer spring weather- the grass is starting to move and look healthier.

Over the next month the tracks and lawns will be sprayed for broadleaf weeds, verti drained and given a much needed feed. Our major renovation work on the track will take place immediately after our next meeting on October 4. This will include dethatching and top dressing and will put us in great order for the upcoming months."
