Notes - February 2015

In This Issue...

From the President

I would like to send a big THANK YOU to Marty Cowan, Kristina Leary, and Eileen Robertson for all their hard work putting on another FABULOUS Teacher's Luncheon on February 12th. A good time was had by all!
THANK YOU to Katie McCaughey, our School Psychologist Intern for her presentation "Study Skills, Organization, and Time Management" on February 10th. If you missed the presentation, some of the resources she discussed, along with her contact information for any further questions you may have, may be found here
I would to send big THANK YOU to Coretta Bennett, Lei Zhang, and all the families who participated for putting together another AMAZING International Night!! They had 20 countries represented. It was a great night of culture filled with fun, food and native dance. The costumes were beautiful!
Thank you to all those who came out to Pump It Up this past Wednesday night for a fun night out!
I attended a Board of Education PTA Presidents meeting this past Monday night. It was a night of conversation about the PARCC Assessment tests that our students, grades 3-5, will be taking in the month of March. I HIGHLY recommend going to the HCPSS.ORG webpage, typing in PARCC Assessment in the search bar. You will find a WEALTH of information regarding the PARCC. A few notes about the test...
  1. Your student will be given scratch paper to do Math problems on.
  2. If your student is not sure of an answer, they may move on to the next question and will be able to go back at the end of the test.
  3. If your student finishes the test before his/her classmates are finished, they may have a book or magazine to read quietly while they wait.
Our next PTA meeting is March 10th at 7:00 p.m. in the Art Room. Hope to see you there!

Thank you,

Cindy Johnson
Fulton Elementary School PTA President

Fulton International Night

Despite the cold weather, hundreds of Fulton Families attended the schools’ 8th International Night last Friday, February 20th. The evening is one to be remembered, as it was a great display of diversity and inclusion at our school. This was evidenced in the art showcase, with 12 performances this year, as well as the vast global presence from more than 20 countries including displays and food sampling from the following: Anguilla, China, El Salvador, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Guatemala, India, Korea, Greece, Poland, Spain, Russia, Congo, Pakistan, Slovenia, France, St. Kitts & Nevis, Somalia, Uganda, Colombia, USA, and more.
Congratulations to all of the host countries that won prizes including gift cards to Starbucks, Chipotle, and AMC Movies. We also want to congratulate our student winners who turned in their International Night quizzes. The PTA silent auction was a great success too with creative and one of a kind donations from the administration, teachers, and private community donors!
Thank you to all of the countries that displayed, performed, participated in the processional, and dressed in their native attire. Special thanks to the Girls Scout Troop, Cultural Care Au Pairs, and parent volunteers who helped with concessions, welcome table, flag processional, crafts, set up, clean up, and more.  The night was a huge success in part because of the tremendous execution from DJ Bennett and Emcees, Ms. Acheampong and Ms. Masters, Susan McPherson, Ms. Howell, and Fulton Elementary’s PTA Board!
The co-chairs of International Night, Coretta Bennett and Lei Zhang, would like to thank you for celebrating cultural diversity at Fulton Elementary!
We look forward to seeing you next year!

Chiller Replacement at Fulton Elementary

Fulton Elementary will be receiving the final chiller replacement in the next few weeks.  The replacement process will not impact student or school activity. On Saturday, February 27th, you will see a large crane on school property that will be used to set the chiller. Construction will be ongoing until the end of March, but again, will not impact regular school activity. The good news is that Fulton Elementary will have new air conditioning for the warmer weather months. It is coming!

Let’s Get Every Kid in a Park

From sea to shining sea, our country is home to gorgeous landscapes, vibrant waterways, and historic treasures that all Americans can enjoy. But with young people spending more time in front of screens than outside, they're missing out on valuable opportunities to explore, learn, and play in the spectacular outdoor places that belong to all of them.

President Obama is committed to giving every kid the chance to explore America’s great outdoors and unique history. That’s why today he launched the Every Kid in a Park initiative, to help get all children to visit and enjoy the outdoors. Starting in September, every fourth-grader in the nation will receive an “Every Kid in a Park” pass that’s good for free admission to all of America’s federal lands and waters — for them and their families — for a full year.

We also know that many children don’t visit these places because they can’t get there easily. So we’ll also help schools and families arrange field trips and visits by providing key trip-planning tools and helping to cover transportation costs for schools with the greatest financial need. more
