Newsletter - October 2014

In This Issue...

From the President

Happy Thursday Everyone!

Thank you to everyone who came out for Spirit Night on Monday, October 6th, at La Palapa Too. We had such a great turnout. Our next Spirit Night (dine out) event is November 12th at J&P Pizza, located at 8305 Ice Crystal Drive, Laurel. It will be from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Flyers will come home the week before the event.

I am sure you have seen and heard about our big fundraiser of the year from your students by now. It is called Boosterthon. We had an amazing Pep Rally on Tuesday to kick off our event. The students, teachers, and administration really got into it. Please refer to the email that went home on Tuesday, October 7th for information or email Rochelle Weirich or Cindy Johnson for any additional questions. Please talk with your student each night to hear about the daily character lessons.

Coming home in today’s Friday Folder is a Box Tops for Education collection sheet. Please tape any Box Tops you may have onto the sheet, fill in the teacher’s name along with your student’s name, and have your child turn it in to their teacher.

We are still looking for a Cultural Arts Chairperson. The Cultural Arts Chairperson works with teachers to coordinate cultural arts events that occur during the school day. If you would like to chair the committee or co- chair the committee, please email Cindy Johnson.

The first Fulton Elementary School PTA Meeting will be October 14th at 7:00 p.m. in the Media Center. Hope to see you there!!

Boosterthon Fun Run Fundraiser

The Boosterthon Fun Run is a 9-day, values-based fundraising program that teaches students about Fitness, Leadership, and Character. This year’s Boosterthon character theme is Rock’n Town Live, a fun, music festival theme all about community. Students will learn from five band members who specialize in an instrument and a fun way to make communities rock.

Plug In To Serve, Amplify Others, Listen For Feedback, Play Hard, and Thank Your Crowd.

Students learn these Community Challenges while gathering pledges to help their school. The Boosterthon Fun Run program ends with an exciting Fun Run where students run laps around the Boosterthon Speedway. All students are invited to run in this action-packed experience that becomes a highlight of the school year. Most students will run 30-35 laps at the Boosterthon Fun Run, with a lap max of 35. Students do not have to gather pledges to participate but must be registered to run. Students receive a free gift just for registering. Register your student today at

Thank you for your generosity and support!

Healthy Snack Options

Recently, Howard County Public School System implemented a new policy: Wellness Through Nutrition and Physical Activity (9090). There have been a lot questions about what snacks can be brought into the classroom for parties and snacks.  Following is a list of suggestions:
  • celery sticks, cumber rounds, and laughing cow cheese w/ pretzel sticks
  • string cheese
  • raw vegetables (packaged carrots, vegetable tray) and hummus
  • fruit cups
  • graham cracker squares
  • pudding cups
  • corn chips and salsa with shredded mozzarella cheese
  • popcorn (microwave) with parmesan cheese
  • hot chocolate (instant mix)
  • celery and cream cheese with raisins
Always check with your student’s teacher before sending in snacks for parties or other special occasions. This is not a Fulton Elementary School approved list.

PTA Supports Increase in E-rate Funding

National PTA has been working with a wide range of associations in hopes to push the FCC to make a permanent increase to E-rate funding. In a letter addressed to the FCC, the National PTA—along with more than 30 organizations—requested a permanent increase in funding for the E-rate program to allow schools and public libraries to keep pace with rapidly increasing connectivity demands. The letter also cites three major reasons for increasing funding to the E-rate program:
  • Access to 21st century education and learning
  • Moving from basic connectivity to capacity
  • Equity (focusing on disadvantaged communities)
To learn more about PTA's participation in this coalition, or if you would like a copy of the letter, please contact Matthew L. Evans.

Common Core...There's an App For That

The Committee for Economic Development and the Business Roundtable released a new Common Core App that is available for both Android and iOS formats. The app is called Business4Readiness, which includes many of the National PTA's resources on Common Core. This is a great tool for help understand the new standards. Download the app today!
