SVRC 2015 June Newsletter

Many of you continue to work closely with the SVRC and SVA as we routinely engage with alumni, community groups, and corporations.  Over the last few months, with your help we have raised thousands of dollars for student awards and scholarships. Providing awards/scholarships requires continuous fund-raising.  Going forward, there are two ways you can get involved:
  • On the Front End:  When opportunities arise, we encourage our SVA leaders along with other engaged student veterans to attend sponsored luncheons with business/community leaders and alumni. If you want to participate, let me know and we’ll add you to our contact list.
  • In Process: When you meet our donors at our receptions, whether you receive an award or not, please take the opportunity to thank them.
  • On the Back End:  Wells Fargo recently donated several thousand dollars and will be coming to the SVRC on Thursday, Nov 1  to present the check and engage in a photo opportunity with our students. If you want to participate, please swing by the SVRC (Rm 481 Tate) at 11:40 on Thursday to get your picture taken and say thank you. Dress is casual.

Upcoming Student Veterans Association (SVA) Meeting:

The next SVA meeting is Wednesday Nov 7th at 4:00 pm in Rm 482.
  • Free food and drink provided

Priority Registration:

All self-identified undergraduate student veterans should receive priority registration scheduled for this Friday, Nov 2.
  • If you did not receive an appointment consistent with your status, contact either your advisor or the VA Certifying Official soonest.

Delayed VA Benefits:

As you may know, the VA is running behind paying benefits this semester.  If you are experiencing a financial hardship due to a delay in GI Bill payments, please contact the Education Call Center at 1-888-442-4551.  You should also inform the UGA Certifying Official.
  • If after calling the VA the issue remains problematic, please contact the SVRC before the situation become untenable.  Given a little time, we can work with you and the Office of Financial Aid to explore alternate source of funds.

Senator Isakson’s New Field Rep:

We are pleased to announce that Brad Williamson is Senator Isakson's new Field Representative.

Brad, who we have worked closely with in the past, will be speaking at our Nov 8th Reception and beginning in Spring 2019 will be periodically visiting the SVRC to meet with Student Veterans who may have issues with the VA or other Federal entities.
  • In the interim, if you have a concern and need Brad's help click here.

College to Congress

If you want to work in DC consider applying to the 9-week College to Congress Program.  This program creates pathways for students to intern in Congress who could not otherwise afford to do so.  This is a no-cost non-profit program that may be ideal for student veterans.
  • To learn or apply click here before the Nov 30th deadline

Last Call Advisory Board Representative:

The Office of Institutional Diversity is recruiting student veterans to serve on their Student Advisory Board.  Serving alongside members from other underrepresented groups, board members will have an opportunity to advise senior leadership on a wide variety of policies and programs. To participate, you must be able to attend the following meetings (Dec 4, Feb 5 and Mar 26) scheduled in Tate from 5:30-6:30PM).
