GI Bill STEM Extension:

Effective August 1, 2019, the VA extended the education benefits for veteran students seeking science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) degrees.

Students who have used the majority or all of their Post-9/11 GI Bill are able to apply to the Department of Veterans Affairs for extended benefits. If approved, the VA will pay eligible students up to nine additional months of benefits, or a maximum lump sum of $30,000.

FAFSA:

Did you know 90% of our undergraduate student veterans have neither submitted nor updated their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)? Many students believe their VA benefits disqualify them from additional Federal benefits; not true.

  • The FAFSA is required to participate in three Federal programs (i.e. Pell Grants, Federal Loans, Federal Work Study {FWS}) and serves as a critical component to determine eligibility for other UGA awards, scholarships, and requests for Emergency Funds.

This year, in partnership with the Office of Financial Aid, we are trying to get more Student Veterans to submit/update their FAFSAs and, in turn, increase their access to supplemental funding opportunities. To learn more or apply click here.

Apply for SUITUP - Free Professional Attire:

The UGA Career Center will be hosting 'Dawgs Suit Up' on Sunday, September 8th from 12:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. - an event where select UGA students will be able to purchase professional business attire at deeply discounted rates of up to 70% off from the JCPenney Athens store. Using the award ($200 gift card), students are generally able to purchase a suit jacket and pants or a skirt, shirt, shoes, and professional accessories often originally valued at over $1,000.

Last fall, the UGA Career Center allocated 592 awards - including many to our student veterans - totaling $118,400.

Deadline for applications: 26 August 2019

Fall SVRC Scholarships Open:

Again this Fall we are offering thousands of dollars in awards and scholarships to our student veterans. Only one application is required to compete for our Fall scholarships. Graduate, professional, and undergraduate student veterans are encouraged to apply. We have made the application process relatively easy, however, recognize the applications are reviewed by a panel of veterans, faculty, staff, and/or community leaders. So take your time and put some thought into completing the application. The application window will remain open through Sep 18th COB.

Share Your Unique Story and Receive $75:

In partnership with the Special Collections Library, the SVRC will again this year solicit student veteran oral histories. To date, nearly 75 student veterans have leaned forward to share their histories.

Tom McShea, one of our graduate student veterans pursuing a Masters Degree in History, is facilitating this year’s interviews. The interviews are generally 45-60 minutes in length and will be conducted in the SVRC (Tate Rm 481).
  • To encourage your participation, the first 50 student veterans (graduate, professional or undergraduate) to sign up and share their unique stories will receive $75.
UGA’s oral history program is one of the leading student veteran oral history programs in the nation. To learn more or sign up click here.

Improve Your Brand and Earn $250:

As you may know, in partnership with Lockheed Martin (LM) last year the SVRC recognized student veterans (all majors) with a $250 award who improved their resumes, broadened their networks, and enhanced their brands. With Lockheed's help, this year we'll again award the first 100 student veterans who complete the readiness program $250 (i.e. goal setting, resume development, networking). We'll also provide free professional headshots for students participating in this initiative.

We’re not just giving money away, there is work involved. Going forward we’ll work with you one-on-one to ensure your brand is optimized for an internship, a job, or graduate school.

If you are interested in kicking your brand up a notch click here to set up a time to meet with Mandy Brooks, our new full-time team member and Readiness Coach. Mandy is a UGA Alumni and a former Assistant Dean of Marketing at Kennesaw State University.
