SVRC 2015 June Newsletter

Student Veterans Association (SVA) Meet and Greet Wednesday (Free Pizza):

SVRC Scholarships OPEN:

Completing a single SVRC application will allow you to compete for appoximately 35 SVRC Fall awards valued at nearly $20,000.

Spring Food Scholarship Now OPEN:

If you are barely making ends meet and sacrificing a balanced diet to do so, considering apply for a UGA Food Scholarship.   Most every semester one or more deserving veterans participate in this beneficial Student Affairs Program.

Pre-Calculus Review for Student Veterans:  

Professor Kel Black, Math Department, has agreed to host a special review for veterans before their three scheduled exams. 
If interested, please RSVP to attend the  first review on Wednesday Sep 12th at 4:30-5:30.  Location TBD

Signup for Early Access to Career Fair Employers:

This Career Center sponsored Diversity/Inclusion event provides an exclusive opportunity for underrepresented groups, like student veterans, to connect with employers immediately prior to participating in the Career Fair on Sep 19th. Approximately 50 employers representing a variety of industries will attend at the Classic Center. Recommended dress is business professional.

Want to Work in or with the Federal Government?

The pathway to all jobs, particularly Federal jobs, is through a relevant internship. 

UGA’s Washington Seminar Program is the only Washington D.C. based program offered to undergraduate students.  This comprehensive program combines coursework and internships with a residential living environment. This program may be an ideal complement to a criminal justice, international affairs, or political science majors.
The application process includes the application, resume, and personal statement. Once selected, the WSP will assist you in finding an internship in the DC area.

National Security Leadership Opportunity: 

The Center for International Trade and Security (CITS) is accepting applications for the Richard B. Russell Security Leadership Program (SLP). This selective undergraduate program focuses on the creation and analysis of national security policy, the management of international conflict, and the nonproliferation of both conventional arms and weapons of mass destruction. The SLP year-long scholarly program involves undergraduate research, projects, and professional development.
NOTE:  The program is NOT  limited to students of a specific major or class standing. All students interested in national security or national security policy, regardless of academic background, are encouraged to apply. Each of the two (2) semesters of the Richard B. Russell Security Leadership Program confers three (3) hours of academic credit.

Funding your Study Abroad:

Many student veterans are exploring study abroad opportunities. As you navigate this course of action, make sure you synchronize your planning with UGA's Certifying Official so you know what costs will and won't  be funded by your VA benefits. 

If there are funding gaps, UGA's Experiential Learning Office offers scholarships that may help offset shortfalls funding for internships and/or study abroad classes. But note, the deadline is October 12th.

  • Who: All graduate and undergraduate student veterans are welcome at attend
  • What: Introduction to Cox internships/jobs
  • When/Where: September 6th, 8:00AM - 9:15AM in Tate Rm 482
  • Food: Free Chick Fil-A biscuits and juice
  • Signup: Please REGISTER so we can order the correct amount of food

Student Veteran Breakfast with First Data on September 13th: 

  • Who: All graduate and undergraduate student veterans are welcome to attend
  • What: Internship and Part-time Jobs (i.e. analysts, sales and others)
  • When/Where: September 13th, 8:00AM - 9:15AM in Tate Room 482
  • Food: Free Chick Fil-A biscuits and juice
  • Signup: Please REGISTER so we can order the correct amount of food

Student Veteran Breakfast with Sandia National Labs on September 20th:

  • Who: All STEM majors/graduate students
  • What: Overview of Sandia, the opportunities available to veterans at Sandia, and how to pursue them
  • When/Where: September 20th, 8:00AM - 9:15AM in Tate Room 482
  • Food: Free Chick Fil-A biscuits and juice
  • Signup: Please REGISTER so we can order the correct amount of food

Student Veteran Breakfast with GOOGLE on October 4th

  • Who: Undergraduates interested in Google’s BOLD Internship Program

If you are a female student veteran and wish to share your perceptions about the accessibility and satisfaction of veteran's health and wellness resources consider taking this short UGA survey. If you have previously taken the survey, please contact Dorris Scott to receive your gift card.
