SVRC Renovation and Temporary Location:

The renovations to the SVRC are taking a bit longer than expected; however, we are still open for business. For the next few weeks, the SVRC is located in temporary space on the fourth floor of the Tate Student Center, Room 479.
  • Temporary phone number is 706-542-7583.
  • E-mail remains SVRC@uga.edu

SVRC Readiness Program:

This summer we’ve been working with a number of students to get their resumes up-to-speed and networks established before the Fall hiring blitz. In support of our readiness program, we've hired a new full-time team member (Mandy Brooks). Mandy has deep expertise in resume development, networking, and branding. Mandy will be available to meet with students beginning in early July.
  • NOTE:  Last year nearly 50 student veterans completed the first step in readiness (i.e. resume development) and were recognized with a $250 award funded by our partners at Lockheed Martin. This honorarium, at some level, will continue for AY19-20; details to follow.
If you are here over the Summer and need a professional resume for the Fall, now is the ideal time to get the ball rolling.

UGA Alumni-Student Mentor Program:

The University of Georgia’s Career Center recently launched its first-ever student mentoring program. Available mentors include alumni, faculty, and staff. Mentors are matched to students by degree, interest, and/or location.

This new university initiative nicely complements the non-profit mentoring opportunities uniquely offered through our own SVRC Readiness Program.

 Tate Student Center Part-time Work:

Tate hires more than 100 student staff members a year into a variety of positions.  If you are still looking for part-time work click here.

University Health Center’s Healthy Vet Program:

As a reminder, students who have paid their UHC Health Fee (generally covered by the Post 9/11 Benefit) have access to free primary care on campus and discounts to “specialty” UHC services. For example, student veterans get 50% off a dental cleaning and exam; year around. For other discounts associated with the UHC Healthy Vet Program click here.

FAFSA Reminder:

FAFSA:  Did you know 90% of our undergraduate student veterans have neither submitted nor updated a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)? Most students believe their VA benefits disqualify them from additional Federal benefits; not true.

  • The FAFSA is required to participate in three Federal programs (i.e. Pell Grants, Federal Loans, Federal Work Study {FWS}) and serves as a critical component to determine eligibility for other UGA awards, scholarships, and requests for Emergency Funds.

This year, in partnership with the Office of Financial Aid, we are trying to get more Student Veterans to submit/update their FAFSAs and, in turn, increase their access to relevant FWS positions. FWS is awarded on a first-come, first-served basis and increasingly university work center opportunities can be tailored to support your developmental needs.

The 2019-2020 FAFSA deadline is June 30th. To apply click here. When you complete your FAFSA, please mark YES to question #31 “Are you interested in being considered for work-study?”  For more information about the FWS program, please visit the Office of Student Financial Aid’s website.

Please pass along any feedback, questions, concerns or ideas to our SVRC Newsletter Student Editor, Jason Badia.
