Spring 2018 SVRC Scholarships
REMINDER: Thanks to our generous community and alumni donors, we are offering nearly 25 scholarships to our student veterans this semester. To apply, click here.
Suit-up Results
Nearly 40 student veterans submitted applications for this semester's Suit-up Gift Cards at JCPenny's.
Though there will not be enough awards to cover all applicants, the strong demand will help us raise additional monies next semester. The Career Center will notify those selected within the next 10-days.
Again, thank you for taking the time to apply.
Pitching and Interviewing for the Career Fair
In preparation for the Career Center's Diversity Networking Event (Jan. 30), the Career Fair (Jan. 31), and follow-on employer interviews (Feb. 1), Paul Allaire (Terry College’s MBA Program) will present a short workshop on pitching and interviewing. All majors are welcome and food will be provided.
To register for the Pitching and Interviewing Workshop (PI), click here.
- Free food for registered participants catered by Tazikis
- Location: Arch Room, Tate 471
- Date/Time: Thursday, Jan. 25, 4-5 p.m.
Prior to the workshop, the Career Center will be hosting Resume Critique sessions in Tate Grand Hall from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. on January 24-25. All veterans are encouraged to meet with our Career Center Liaison, Lisa Mann, during one of the resume critique sessions prior to coming to the PI workshop.
NOTE: Take some time prior to this session to develop your resume with one of our Readiness Coaches or visit the Career Center home page and click on Job Search, then Resumes, for Resume Guideline, Resume Samples, and the Online Resume Creator.
AppleCare Follow-up
Brit, a recruiter from AppleCare, will be on campus from Jan 30-1 Feb meeting with students. She is particularly interested in recruiting student veterans for part-time positions with AppleCare (see last week's newsletter). Brit will be at the Jan 30th networking event and will host a booth at the Jan 31st Career Fair. Like most employers, she also will be conducting candidate interviews on campus on Feb 1st.
If you are interested in applying or have questions about AppleCare, please contact Brit directly at Brit@apple.com Finally, we are meeting with Brit and her AppleCare team on 30 Jan in the SVRC; if you let us know you have an interest in working for Apple we can help promote you.
Preparing for Graduate School
On Feb. 20 from 4-5 p.m. Deborah Martinez from the UGA Graduate School will facilitate an awareness workshop, "Preparing for Graduate School." The workshop will be held in Tate 482.
The workshop will help you find programs of study while recognizing: admission’s deadlines; required exams; and types of funding available. All majors are welcome.
Fully Funded Internship Opportunity in Washington, D.C.
Again this summer, The Washington Center (a non-profit) will be onboarding 25 student veterans from around the country to participate in the VET Initiative in Washington D.C., from June 3 - August 11, 2018.
Participants will intern four days per week for ten weeks within a D.C. organization in a position that fits their career interests and skills. All participants will receive a full scholarship for the program ($14,000 value) which includes housing. Take advantage of this veteran-exclusive opportunity to work in the nation's capital by applying here.
NOTE: This non-UGA program complements the UGA Washington Semester Program, which offers similar experiences but in the Fall/Spring.
Recording/Preserving Your Oral History
Again this semester, we are working with the Special Collections Library to record the oral histories of our undergrad and graduate student veterans.
Kate Dahlstrand, one of our student veterans pursuing her Ph.D., facilitates this popular initiative. The process is easy, enjoyable, and generally requires less than an hour.
