SVRC Scholarship Update:

We had nearly 50 student veterans apply for scholarships this semester.  Our selection board meets this week and we anticipate approving about 30 awards valued at nearly $15,000.

Those selected will be formally notified by Feb 20th and checks should be available for pickup NLT mid-March.

Zero Interest on Student Loans for those Veterans who served in Combat Zones during the Repayment Period:

Federal law exempts members of the military from paying interest for up to 60 months on certain student loans while serving or having served in an area that qualifies them to receive hostile fire or imminent danger pay.
Taking advantage of this student loan benefit is simple and straightforward. Eligible active duty, National Guard, Reserve service members, and veterans can take these actions to avoid student loan interest:
1. Check your loan type and servicer by logging in to “My Federal Student Aid
2. Contact your loan servicer to find out how to provide any of the following forms of proof:
  • A leave/earnings statement showing receipt of hostile fire or imminent danger pay
  • A certifying official’s statement and signature
  • Military orders showing service in a hostile area

Gas Up on an Oral History

Gas cardWe’ve collected nearly two dozen oral histories to date.  To encourage more veterans to participate, for the month of February we’re offering free $25 gas cards to the first five students who register. Kate Dahlstrand, one of our student veterans pursuing her Ph.D., facilitates this popular initiative. The process is easy, enjoyable, and generally requires less than an hour.

Civil War Veterans and Emergence of Modern America:

James Marten, Professor of History at Marquette University will present a talk focused on the Grand Army of the Republic, the most important Union veterans’ organization.  This talk will show that these “old soldiers”—many were still in their forties and fifties during the GAR’s heyday in the 1880s and 1890s—were, in fact, harbingers of modern American values and policies.  They invented identity politics when they aggressively campaigned for the expansion of the veterans’ pensions and went on to support an American foreign policy that imagined a bigger role for the United States in the world.
