SVA and VFW Fellowships:

The Student Veterans of American (SVA) and the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) are seeking student veteran candidates to participate in their 2018 SVA-VFW Legislative Fellowship program. The fellowship, now in its fourth year, will bring 10 selected student veterans to Washington (March 4 – 9) to meet with their congressional members.

Student veterans interested in applying for the 2018 Legislative Fellowship must complete an application package that includes an essay proposal. Legislative Fellowship opportunities are open to VFW members who are currently attending colleges and universities with active SVA chapters.

Last spring, the US Global Leadership Coalition (USGLC) sponsored a similar June trip to DC followed by a conference and visits with senators/representatives; six UGA student veterans participated.

New GI Bill Proposal:

Senator Isakson has introduced legislation that, if approved, would eliminate the 15-year period a veteran has to use the GI Bill while offering additional benefits that might impact veterans, national guard and reservists attending UGA. To learn more click here.

Student Veteran Oral History Project:

In partnership with the Special Collections Library, the SVRC will continue to sponsor student veteran oral histories during the 2017-18 academic year. If you are interested in sharing your story and want it preserved for generations to come, contact the SVRC to arrange an interview time.

Kate Dahlstrand, one of our graduate student veterans pursuing her Ph.D in History, facilitates the Q&A associated with these oral histories. To date, over a dozen student veterans have leaned forward to record their histories.
