CKAS Seed Sale: Nov. 3rd (NEW PROCESS!!!)

The Seed Sale Committee has worked with Southern States to arrange sale changes that we hope will make the process of supporting CKAS through the purchase of seed easier on our members and easier on Southern States staff while guaranteeing fresher seed for our feathered friends. Starting this November, CKAS will begin offering $10 (tax included) Member Discount Cards that entitle donors to a 5% discount on any bird seed or bird feeder/house equipment purchased at Southern States on Palumbo Drive YEAR ROUND from November 2018 through November 2019. Gone are the days of "storing" seed. By switching to a buy-as-you-go discount card, Southern States will no longer need to keep purchased seed on hand and can therefore provide fresher seed. (Yeah!)  Bonus: Southern States has volunteered to match the 5% discount on all such purchases as a quarterly donation to CKAS. Better yet: on official Sale Days like November 3rd, Southern States has offered to extend a 10% discount to card-holding members for seed and supplies purchased that day. So if you purchase $100 worth of seed on Sale Days, you've already paid for your Member Discount Card and every other purchase throughout the year puts you ahead.  Plus, you're supporting CKAS's work to help local birds. Care to volunteer? 7:30a to 10:30a & 10a to 1p shifts: seedsale@ckas.org.

Mark Your Calendar for the X-Mas Bird Count
This year marks the 119th Annual Audubon X-Mas Bird Count. Mark your calendars to join CKAS for our local count circle on December 15th. You don't have to be a great birder to join a count circle. We pair the old with the new, hoping to have several sets of eyes and ears in each group. Most groups start early, meeting to drive from spot count location to spot count location, with lots of good conversation, stops for coffee and hot chocolate, and speed birding. Multiple groups, varied start and finish times, varied locations—highly flexible! Your participation contributes to the longest citizen science project ever, helping to estimate bird populations—those that are thriving and those in trouble. This sort of research in turn guides our efforts to help our local birds; so your help is very, very important. Contact xmasbirdcount@CKAS.org to be assigned to a count circle. There will likely be a pot luck after the count -- exact details TBA.

October Big Day
Final Tally
Whoops!  We did it again!  Thanks to everyone who helped Fayette County last month on October Big Day to once again top Jefferson County's Big Day count, this time by 105 species to 94. Jefferson, with its diversity of habitat, holds the historical record for number of bird species reported with a grand total of 316 whereas Fayette only has 273. But Fayette's recent Big Day reports may be shifting the birding capital of Kentucky a little more "Central."

Owl Prowls Anyone?
Last season, we had over 250 people show up to our scheduled owl prowls, many of whom have since attended other bird walks. We've already gotten requests for more owl prowl events. The next Steering Committee group plans to add several of these to the calendar from December through February when the owls are most likely to be seen. Watch for prowl info in future newsletters.
If you have a Kroger Plus card, you can help CKAS raise funds through the Kroger Community Rewards program every time you shop. Simply select Central Kentucky Audubon Society (Org. #65224) as your Reward Charity of choice. Doing so will NOT affect your fuel point savings, but will help CKAS increase its share of Kroger's donations. We currently earn about $200 a year with this program; more families linking their Kroger Plus cards to our cause would greatly help us help birds. Check the bottom of your next Kroger receipt to make sure it says: "At your request we are donating to Central Kentucky Audubon Society."

Need to buy anything online? CKAS is supported by Amazon Smile. If you #StartWithaSmile, Amazon donates 0.5% of your purchase price to the Central Kentucky Audubon Society, at no cost to you! Please bookmark this link to support CKAS every time you shop the net.
What if you don't receive Audubon Magazine? Then you're probably not an official member of the National Audubon Society. You don't have to be to get our newsletter or attend events, but you can join NAS for only $20 annually (& help support CKAS in the process) by following his link.  Be sure to choose "KY | Central Kentucky Audubon (J51)" under the Chapter Donation Designation menu to automatically return your first year's dues directly to our chapter so we can do that much more to help local birds.
