A Preview to Pope Francis' Upcoming Environmental Encyclical:
On May 21
during his general audience he focused on knowledge, a gift of the Spirit:

  •  When our eyes are illumined by the Spirit, they open to contemplate God, in the beauty of nature and in the grandeur of the cosmos, and they lead us to discover how everything speaks to us about Him and His love…

  • The Lord favors us! We must give thanks to him for this. The gift of knowledge sets us in profound harmony with the Creator and allows us to participate in the clarity of his vision and his judgment…

  • When we exploit creation, we destroy that sign of God’s love. To destroy creation is to say to God: “I don’t care”. And this is not good: this is sin.  Custody of creation is precisely custody of God’s gift and it is saying to God: “thank you, I am the guardian of creation so as to make it progress, never to destroy your gift”. This must be our attitude to creation: guard it for if we destroy creation, creation will destroy us! Don’t forget that.
Finally, there was also a hint on the plane ride home from the Holy Land that Pope Francis and Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I may be “coming up with a joint initiative to deal with this [ecological] problem.” Read their  Common Declaration from May 25, 2014

Catholics Celebrate Annual Fortnight for Freedom

June 21 begins the third annual Fortnight for Freedom. This year's campaign revolves around the theme Freedom to Serve and focuses on the Church's imperative that her members help the poor and vulnerable, even when faced with persecution and other challenges of the world.

The Fortnight will occur at a time when our liturgical calendar celebrates a series of great martyrs who remained faithful in the face of persecution by political power.

These martrys include St. Thomas More and St. John Fisher, St. John the Baptist, SS. Peter and Paul, and the First Martyrs of the Church of Rome.

The Diocese of Orlando has produced a video and other resources about the freedom that is found in faith in Jesus Christ.  The video also explains how freedom is a gift and responsibility. The video and resources can be found here: http://www.orlandodiocese.org/freedom-gift-and-responsibility.

Have You Seen These?

This year with the support of private pro-life donors in the diocese of Orlando we have been able to lease billboards with a pro-life message throughout the metro Orlando area.  Currently there are 23 billboards displayed with an additional 15 to be added soon.   Several are large digital billboards, some are (paper) poster size (10’ x20’) and some are full size vinyls (10’  x30’ or 10’ x 40’).  Watch for them.  If you or someone you know would like to support (or know more about) this campaign you may contact Ralph Cory,  rcorysr@hotmail.com or 407-812-9071(H) or 561-889-5971(mobile).

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is June 15
An estimated 5 million older Americans are victims of elder abuse, neglect, or exploitation every year. Still, experts believe that for every reported case, as many as 23 cases go unreported. For World Elder Abuse Awareness Day 2014, the Administration for Community Living (ACL) put together a toolkit to support efforts to prevent, identify and respond to this serious, often hidden problem. To learn more, click here.
