Hearty Winter Foods to Fortify Us!

Okay, we have to admit it...we love winter!  We haul wood and shovel snow (Go Rachel!) and chop ice day in and day out this winter.  Amy had to shovel nearly 3 feet of packed snow off of her perennial plant propagating cages today to get her first seeds planted outdoors.  We've snowshoed endless 5-gallon buckets of compost out to the piles (thanks Pam!).   And yes, our muscles are growing weary, but we have hearty winter foods to energize us, motivate us, keep us going.

Today after a bowl of hot soup; a plate full of fresh, crispy salad; a chocolate cupcake; and a cup of winter tonic herb tea we felt fortified and nourished, ready to go out into the cold for another round of winter chores.

I love watching and experiencing how our choices of what we eat affects us.  I love choosing the colors, textures, aromas, and flavors in a menu to match the moods and needs of the people I'm feeding.  Comfort foods for those going through difficult times.  Bold, passionate colors and flavors for those wanting inspiration.  Colorful, brightly flavored dishes (with plenty of chocolate!) for celebrations.  And robust, starchy foods with plenty of olive oil and butter for our outdoor-working friends.

So this week enjoy a menu full of bright colors, hearty dishes both comforting and bold, and familiar flavors.  Embrace another week of cold and snow.  And allow yourselves to be nourished and nurtured by meals full of delicious foods prepared with joy and love.  And know that soon we'll be eating the first tender greens of spring and rejoicing in the gentle, warm sunshine.
