Hardship, depression, illness, injury, psychic trauma...the challenges so many of us are facing in these difficult times. Each day the news brings a new assault. Pipelines are poised to be built; immigrants are attacked; Muslims, Jews, trans friends, women, people of color are assaulted and marginalized even more; our natural world is ravaged; corruption, deceit and lies abound.
Our housemate Norma Jean just presented me with a "nugget". She has been thinking about aeolian harps...instruments beautifully played by the wind. As climate change brings us crazier weather (tornado in the hilltowns in February?!?...hot/cold/hot/snow), beauty can be found amid chaos and destruction. We listen to the alluring music played by the wind. The howling that travels down our chimney through our woodstove pipe. The rattling of the windows, the whistling of the wind through skeletal winter branches, the clanging of metal structures. An orchestra born of wild weather.
I find my solace and peace in the kitchen. The eye of the storm....calm beauty. I fill with joy at the colors of the fruits and vegetables, the aromas, the sounds of food being transformed, and the palette of flavors upon my taste buds. This is my place of sanity. I am grounded deep in the earth, into tradition, taken back to my ancestors in their kitchens preparing these same foods.
Storms keep brewing, and I return to the kitchen to pour myself into the flavors, textures, aromas, and colors. Against all odds my spirits rise. I bring it to the food and send it out to you. May this week bring you moments of peace and solace, joy and connection.
