Practices for COP26
Daily practices offered through the Plum Village community to support the COP26 UN Climate Conference.

"Look at the immense light we call the sun. If it stops shining, the flow of our life will also stop, and so the sun is our second heart, our heart outside of our body. This immense 'heart' gives all life on earth the warmth necessary for existence".
— Thích Nhất Hạnh

Dear Friends,

Many believe one of the most important conversations in the world is taking place in Glasgow at this time.  COP26 is bringing together thousands of world leaders, NGO Representatives, Government Officials, climate activists, legislators, politicians, heads of state, journalists and others to make decisions about our collective future and identify the urgent next steps we need to change the current trajectory we are on. How can the PV Earth Holder Community around the world work together to continue to support a positive and meaningful outcome for these meetings at Cop26?

We know from the work of Christiana Figures and others that Thay's teachings informed negotiations during the original Paris Accord in 2015. How wonderful that we can work together to continue his work and support the Plum Village Monastics in COP26 and work together again at this time to help something happen?

As we engage we are also making strategic partnerships with other faith-based orgs like Interfaith Power and Light, GreenFaith, the Buddhist Action Coalition, and with BIPOC-led orgs like the Water Protectors, Climate Justice Alliance, and Indigenous Environmental Network.(JB) and we are delighted to support ongoing Interfaith Alliance Building. Today, we are invited to join a PV-led Online Vigil with XR as well as a guided at home practice from Sr Chan Duc.

In Gratitude,

Thich Nhat Hanh's statement on Climate Change for the United Nations
In 2014, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) approached Thich Nhat Hanh as an international faith leader, to request a brief statement about climate change and our relationship to one another and to the Earth. This statement was published on the UNFCCC website, ahead of the Paris Climate Summit in September 2015.

More About the EHC

Who we are…

The Plum Village Community of Engaged Buddhism is a global community of mindfulness practitioners who follow the teachings of Venerable Zen Master Thích Nhất Hạnh (a.k.a. “Thay,” meaning “teacher”). The Earth Holder Community is a branch of the Plum Village tree that applies Thay’s core teachings on engaged Buddhism, mindful living, social and racial justice, and inter-being with Mother Earth at this time of ecological crisis.

Earth Holders’ aim to “bring mindfulness, compassion, healing, and non-violence to protecting ourselves, each other, all beings, and the Earth.”

"The path of brotherhood and sisterhood [and kinship] is more precious than any ideology or religion.”

Thich Nhat Hanh
