2014 Short Video Contest Now Open

Do your summer travel videos tell a story? Are you interested in time-lapse video – GoPro super-wide action – adventures with Google Earth? How about footage of your determined grandson learning how to skateboard?  Or a video profile of someone special whose story should be told? And who's made that hilarious “senior moment” video – the one that could go viral on YouTube?

Entries in the Video Club's 2014 Short Video Contest must be member-produced, 4 minutes or less, and submitted on DVD to the Video Lab by 4 p.m. Friday, December 19, 2014 (one entry per member). Entries will be judged by a panel of members (who have not entered the contest) on content, technical excellence, and special considerations. The top 10 entries will be presented at our Annual “Academy Awards” Banquet, Saturday, January 17, in CH7. Banquet attendees will vote to select top winners in three categories: Best Videography, Best Editing, and Best Picture. Getting help from other members is OK, so start now to get your entry ready. Plan your edits. Pick the music. Join the fun! Click to see full contest information.

Learn About Editing with Corel VideoStudio

The new Corel Forum group will meet every third Tuesday from 10 am to noon in the Video Lab, starting September 16. People with all levels of expertise are welcome. The Forum will not be a class, but an informal exchange about Corel VideoStudio features. Meetings will usually feature a main topic, but will otherwise be unstructured. Since the club is trying to decide which consumer video editing program to teach next year, all members, involved in editing are encouraged to attend.

Thanks and A Big Round of Applause...
to all those who helped make our Video Club table at the Laguna Woods Village's 50th Anniversary Club Expo on September 8 in CH5 a success! (Two additional rooms were needed for overflow tables at the large event, but we stayed in the main hall.) Three new members joined the club during the Expo, and several others took membership applications.

A series of Chuck Hale's short travel videos alternated with footage from the successful “Never Too Late to Date” Casting Call on August 30 to draw attention to our table. Tom Martin brought historic cameras from our club collection to add to the display. President Lucy Parker produced a new poster about our classes as well as literature to hand out.

Joining Lucy at the table were Chuck Hale, who brought a laptop and large monitor, and Phil Doran, who led a team scouring the crowd to recruit more male contestants for the upcoming video production, “Never Too Late to Date.”

Assisting Phil were Gloria D'Simone-Shute, Lana Williams, Vice President Allen Fortson, and Richard Wisniach. Others at the table included Wolfgang Kutter, Secretary Lisa Kirsoff, and Education Chair Betsy Martin. Mike Evans, with his still camera in hand as usual, took photos of the entire event for the City of Laguna Woods. Norma Benner saved the day by bringing an extra card table and literature rack when we discovered that, like many other clubs that day, we had been limited to a half-sized table.

Most clubs had to settle for small tables at the huge Club Expo. Our Video Club was lucky to have a corner to display posters and to add a second table and literature rack - delivered at the last minute by Norma Benner. Our table drew lots of interest and three new members.

Gloria D'Simone-Shute, who will host our upcoming “Never Too Late to Date” video production, announced our search for more male contestants.

Table workers included President Lucy Parker, Betsy Martin, Chuck Hale, and Wolfgang Kutter.

Next Project Day Will be October 6

“Intermediate Video Editing” Class to Start October 13

A six-week “Intermediate Video Editing” class starts Monday, October 13. To be held from 10 am to noon in the Video Lab, it will be taught by Chuck Hale and Pat Burr. $20 for members, $30 for non-members (includes club membership for 2014 and 2015).  Click here for more info

Free Video Editing Software Available

Member Jerry Moore forwarded this information to The Videogram about new free video editing software: “Flash Integro has released a new version of its VSDC Free Video Editor. Version 2.2.0 enables users to create an animated object from a set of static images of any preferred format, including the native format of the Photoshop editor.” Click here to read the press release . Thanks a lot, Jerry!

Audio Adapter Allows Pro Mics to Be Used with Consumer Camcorders

We picked Dr. Tom Nash's brain for recommended consumer mics to add to our consumer camcorder loan kits - if our 2014 funds from GRF will permit. Members and residents borrowing the equipment will be able to get better sound into their recordings. One of his strong recommendations was for an item some members may want to consider buying for themselves. The club is not purchasing this because we don't  lend our professional mics.

Says Dr. Tom: “The Beachtek DXA-2T Universal Compact Audio Adapter allows professional mics with XLR connectors to be used with 'prosumer' level camcorders which use mini phone plugs for microphones. This allows stereo sound to be recorded with better mics and longer mic cords. Highly recommended!” The link above will take you to B&H Photo, where the item sells for $179. Not cheap, but the unit provides separate gain controls and other pro features – useful for those who want to get quality sound from their consumer/prosumer cameras.
