Learn YouTube Creation and Intermediate PC Video Editing in October Classes

Marsha Berman will again offer her two-session class, “Introduction to YouTube,” starting Tuesday, October 12 at 10 am, this time returning to the Video Lab for in-person instruction. Learn what YouTube is and how it works. Create and set up YouTube channel. Learn how to navigate your YouTube home-page, upload a video, and understand “subscribing.” Handout will be provided. Cost is $10 for members and $25 for non-members (includes club membership). Masks required for those who are not vaccinated.

Dr. Tom Nash will teach ”Intermediate PC Video Editing Using Corel VideoStudio” on Fridays, October 15 and 22. After learning the basics, you’ll want to discover the magical things you can do using Corel VideoStudio. You’ll acquire new skills like how to do multi-camera editing, create more interesting titles, slow or speed up video, capture animation, and much more. You can use Video Lab computers or bring your own Windows laptop equipped with VideoStudio X7 or later. Cost is $10 for members and $25 for non-members (includes club membership). Class starts at 10 am, in the Video Lab. Masks required for those who are not vaccinated.

Chuck Holland, Information Technology Director for Village Management Services, will present “Village Technology Updates” at the next General Meeting, Thursday, October 21, in the Video Lab. Socializing starts at 6:30 pm with the program at 7 pm, followed by audience Q&A. The meeting is open without charge to all Village residents and their guests.
Mr. Holland will discuss information technology issues and recent improvements in Laguna Woods Village during and as we emerge from the COVID-19 crisis. For more information, contact Club President Steve Carman, steve.carman@mac.com, 424-254-6583.
WATCH FOR THIS SPECIAL PROGRAM IN NOVEMBER – At the Thursday, November 18, General Meeting, Leah Glauberman-Silberman, founder of Living Memories Videos, and her associate, Chelsea Zhang, will speak on “Leave Your Legacy.” The Los Angeles-based videographers, both of whom studied filmmaking at the University of Southern California, will explain techniques for creating living memory videos and will screen examples of their work.

Don't miss a new 9:32-min. video shot and edited by Video One Productions Facilitator Fred Harshbarger, showing Video One Productions in action! (Click on the link above.) As the VidOne team shot a segment for the October episode of “Beyond the Gates” at the Certified Farmer's Market of Laguna Hills, Fred followed them with his own camera. His video includes comments by Market Manager Trish Harrison, shown above with Jack Crawbuck operating the camera.
October's “Beyond the Gates” also features footage from Silverado and Modjeska Canyons, including the winery at St. Michael's Abbey in Silverado, with hosts Bill Hemberger and Susan Wheeler. Segment producers for October were John Kelly and Jim Rohrs. Suzanne Savlov is the show's producer and editor, with executive producer Tom Nash.
Scheduling Changes for VidOne Programs
TWICE THE VIEWING TIME GIVEN TO “BTG”!! – Starting in October, Village Television has allotted our monthly half-hour TV show, “Beyond the Gates,” a second weekly time-slot. In addition to being shown on Wednesdays at 11 am, BTG may now be seen on Sundays at 9 am. BTG takes viewers to places of interest near Laguna Woods Village.
“Jazzing Around,” a 60-minute show featuring of West Coast jazz footage shot and edited by Video One Productions Facilitator Fred Harshbarger, has moved from Sunday evenings and will now be seen Fridays at 8:30 pm.
Other VidOne-produced shows, all 30 minutes in length, may still be seen at the following times:
- “Laguna Woods Stories,” interviews by Tom Nash with interesting Village residents – Sundays at 12 noon, Wednesdays at 12 noon
- “Video Club Spotlight,” short videos by club members, edited by Fred Harshbarger – Sundays at 4 pm
- “Welcome to My Home” (re-runs), visiting homes of Village residents born and raised outside the United States – Mondays at 9:30 am, Fridays at 10:30 am (except October 15 and 22)
The Video Club Spotlight series continues at 4 pm Sundays in October. This month viewers will be able to see 5 different examples of club member's creations. The 5 are:

"Tule Lake" by Fred Harshbarger which shows duck and goose hunting in Northern California
"A Most Courageous Girl" by Chuck Hale --
a tribute to his late wife.
"A Day with Hank" by Sheryl Martin -- a tribute to one of her friends.
"Traveling Light at 82" by Lucy Parker -- a tribute to one of her acquaintances
"The Whisperer" by Fred Harshbarger showing how guides talk to their tourists at very popular sites.
The Video Club provides a variety of video services and opportunities to members of the Laguna Woods community.

Doug Sainsbury's Entry Chosen in 3rd Short Dramatic Film Script Contest

"The Hole in One," a story of friendship and ambition by Video Club member Douglas F. Sainsbury was selected in September from eight original scripts submitted in the Video Club’s third Short Dramatic Film Script Contest, according to Dr. Tom Nash, club Vice President, who coordinated script selection. Submission was open to Village residents and members or past members of registered Village clubs.
Doug's script will be produced later this year by Video One Productions, the club's team-based production unit.

A Big Day for the Benners!
A group of Video Club members joined with scores of Benner friends and family on September 25 to share a very special day with three-time club Past-President Norma Benner and her husband, Neil – their 70th wedding anniversary, held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Aliso Viejo. Club Past-President Charles Higginson was on hand, videoing guests as they arrived.
The Benners were married on September 29, 1951. Reminiscences by guests, along with memorabilia and displays, guided participants through Neil and Norma's many travels and adventures, highlighting their lives together. A delicious meal and group singing completed the afternoon.

Don't Miss Theatre Guild Performances of 'Almost Maine' October 13 & 21 in Clubhouse 5
Many Theatre Guild members are also members of the Video Club, and some are involved in the Theatre Guild's current production of the beloved romantic comedy, “Almost Maine.” Video Club member Barbara Powell, the show's producer, reports, “I made a 'commercial' (for the show) and here is the YouTube link, https://youtu.be/RigSTm6QCDE.”
Plan to attend this fun production! Final performances are Wednesday, October 13, and Thursday, October 21, at 7 pm in Clubhouse 5. You may purchase tickets ($12 for general seating) online under the “upcoming shows” button at TheatreGuildLW.com or at the door, cash and checks accepted. Table seating will be limited to allow for social distancing.
Barbara also reports, “For the safety of all: We require either proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test within 72 hours. We are requiring that ALL patrons wear masks throughout the performance. We are using the round tables with 8 chairs per table for better spacing.”
