See the Video Club Through College Student Eyes
Two students from Saddleback College's Film and Video Program, Bill Zwicky and Monica Dell Amore, recently produced a class-project video about the Village – and more specifically, about the Video Club. They interviewed several club members in November, including Phil Doran, Allen Fortson, and Lucy Parker. Take a look at their final product on YouTube: http://youtu.be/AhkfaQPV_Jw
Try Our New Online Club Calendar
The Videogram staff is developing an online calendar for the club. Check it out – and save the link..
Among the oldest free/pay online calendars around, Localendar was founded in 1999 as a community service by Michael Ogrinz, a global markets expert and Bank of America VP. One of its best features is that when you click on an event, a popup window gives you full info (even including pictures) and lets you add the event to your own calendar.
Another feature, soon to be implemented, is that club leaders will be able to add events themselves, as well as details about Studio and Lab room-use reservations – and all members will be able to access the information instantly online. When we update our club website, we hope to embed this easy-to-use calendar in the site -- embedding is a third Localendar feature. Finally, Localendar provides user forums -- something we'd like to explore so our members can establish, follow, and archive important discussion threads.
2014 Short Video Contest Deadline Extended to January 7
Due to a proofreading error, the deadline for our Annual Short Video Contest, originally announced as December 19, was listed on the Awards Banquet flier as January 7. Since the flier has been widely circulated, we're extending the deadline -- which may turn out to be a good thing. Why not finish that video you've been working on and submit it? Click here for entry info. Entries must be member-produced, no longer than 4 minutes, and submitted on DVD in the Video Lab by 4 p.m. Wednesday, January 7, 2015. Look for the entry box and contest registration sheet near the front door. The contest is for club members only. Normally open Tuesday-Friday from 1-4 pm, the Video Lab is currently closed for the holidays and will reopen Tuesday, January 6.
The 10 top entries will be screened at our Annual Awards Banquet, Saturday, January 17 starting at 5:30 p.m. in Clubhouse 7. Attendees will select the top three -- Best Cinematography, Best Editing, and Best Picture – and awards will be presented. If you have questions about the contest, please contact Roland Harrison, Contest Coordinator, Patso@comline.com, 949-830-6803.

GAME A BEING EDITED
The 'Never Too Late to Date' Report
Game A of “Never Too Late to Date” was shot in a complex multi-camera, multi-mic shoot on November 19 in the Video Studio – and the project was a great success! According to Producer Phil Doran, “Most of the editing of the game part is done. We're still fine-tuning and polishing.” Games B and C will be shot in mid to late January, probably on the same day. The schedule will depend on contestant availability, Phil explains. The final product will be aired as a one-hour show on Channel 6 early next year.
An enthusiastic studio audience will be needed for the next shoot, so please STAND BY!. We'll let you know the date and time.
DINNER DATE: Game A contestant Les Wilmot and the date he chose, Sherry Ellis, enjoyed an elegant dinner at the 19 Restaurant on December 16. Many thanks for the great food and hospitality of the 19 Restaurant! They were videoed under the direction of Phil Doran (giving instructions above) by a crew consisting of Dr. Tom Nash, Steve Carman, Roland Harrison, and Allen Fortson, plus Lucy Parker shooting extreme wide-angle GoPro clips just for fun. Still shots were captured by Barbel Dagostino and Lucy Parker (bottom photo). This and future contestant dinner footage will be included in the final show on Channel 6.

Hey! Why Not Try Out Your New Equipment?
Video Club members are invited to look at and borrow new equipment purchased for them this year with GRF funds. This includes a new Sony Action Camera with accessories (similar to a GoPro but with image stabilization), along with a variety of microphones which can greatly improve your video quality. If your camcorder doesn't have a mic jack, you can borrow one from the club that does.
Lisa Kirsoff, assisted by Leon Goldberg, celebrate their success in setting up the new Sony actioncam and projecting a live image on the Video Lab's large TV. At right is the tiny camera with all its accessories. Take a look at it next time you're in the Video Studio. How might you use it in your own videos?
General Meeting Date Changed in February
Our monthly General Meeting in February (the first meeting of the year) will be on the third Friday, February 20, instead of the third Thursday, so that our new President Steve Carman can attend. Steve will be out of state earlier in the month. Program to be announced. Please save the date!
Do You Have Good Video Equipment to Sell?
Think of the Video Club as a place to sell your GOOD used video equipment (not the “junk” -- although you can put that in our “giveaway” box in the Video Lab). Our PC video editing instructor, Chuck Hale, had replaced his excellent Canon still/video camera and posted an “ad” for it in the Video Lab. Over the holidays, Chuck and Past President Norma Benner went around the Village taking stills and videos with Chuck's camera – and Norma ended up buying it (at about one-third of the original cost). A good deal for both and a new creative challenge for Norma. Send your listing(s) with photos to the Videogram (see bottom of page).
Next Project Day Is February 2
There's no Project Day scheduled for Monday, January 5 (too close to the holidays). Our next Project Day will be Monday, February 2, at 1 pm in the Video Lab. Presenters will be Danny Sciupac, Dr. Tom Nash, Leon Goldberg, and Bob and Barbara D'Evelyn.
Open to the public without charge, Project Day offers an opportunity for members to screen recent work and work-in-progress for feedback and discussion. Videos are limited to 8 minutes but may be part of a longer video. Presentation is for members only. Until a new Project Day chair is named, contact President Lucy Parker, firstname.lastname@example.org, 949-456-4657, for more information.
Are YOU Project Day's New Leader?
Lucille Roberts, who has run our monthly Project Days from their inception in summer 2013, has stepped down as of the end of this year. Many thanks to Lucille for doing such a great job! If you're interested in leading or helping with Project Day, please contact President Lucy Parker, email@example.com , 949-456-4657. What's involved? Basically, it's working with member volunteers to line up presenters each month. The refreshments Lucille has served lately were a nice bonus – but they aren't required for the job.
Studio Forum to Meet January 9
The Studio Forum will continue developing comedic video content at its next meeting, Friday, January 9, at 10 am in the Video Studio, according to Forum Facilitator Allen Fortson. The Studio Forum's focus is on the creative side of video production. Meetings are held on Friday mornings (future dates to be announced) and are open free to members, as well as to all residents. For more information, contact Allen, firstname.lastname@example.org , 949-235-8000
Corel Forum to Meet January 20
The Corel Forum will continue its introduction to Corel VideoStudio on Tuesday, January 20, at 10 am in the Video Lab. The Forum meets monthly on the third Tuesday and is open free to members, as well as to all residents. This Forum is for all skill levels. For information, contact Wolfgang Kutter, Forum Facilitator, email@example.com , 949-457-1259. (Click here for flier.)
Old Files To Be Removed from Video Lab Computers
Our PC video editing instructor Chuck Hale is working with Video Lab Coordinator Charles Higginson and others to clean unwanted files off our Lab computers and to set up all Lab computers with the necessary programs. (Over the holidays, Chuck configured our two new desktop PCs, the last of our 2014 GRF-funded purchases.) Thanks a bunch, Chuck! Part of this process will be removal of old data placed on machines by members and other residents.
The "Lab and Studio Policies" adopted by the Video Club Board of Directors on April 3, 2014, state: "Any personal files remaining inactive on Lab or Studio computers for longer than 6 months will be deleted." If you are concerned about your old files and have questions, please contact Chuck, firstname.lastname@example.org , 949-770-4589

Material should normally be submitted by Friday for publication early the following week.
