Astronaut Reid Wiseman Calls RPI from the International Space Station

During Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s reunion weekend Oct. 10, alumni from all classes gathered in the Concert Hall of the Curtis R. Priem Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (EMPAC) to await one of their own via video call.

Panama Canal Centennial: Celebrating Rensselaer Engineers

August 15, 2014, marked the 100th anniversary of the Panama Canal. The canal’s completion, one of the greatest feats of engineering by mankind, brings to light the impressive contributions of Rensselaer engineers who participated in connecting the oceans. Beginning with the Panama Railroad in 1855 and ending with the completion of the Panama Canal in 1914, Rensselaer engineers are peppered throughout this portion of history.

Swimming in an Ocean of Light

Professor Mariana Figueiro, (RPI) Lighting Research Center (LRC) Light and Health Program Director, gave an invited talk at TEDMED Sept. 12, at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. The three-day TEDMED event brought together a series of speakers from diverse backgrounds to inspire new possibilities for the future of health and medicine.

“New Polytechnic” Featured in U.S. News

U.S. News & World Report recently featured an op-ed by President Shirley Ann Jackson, titled “The New Polytechnic: Preparing to Lead in the Digital Economy,” in which she discussed a new way of working and learning that is required for success in this data-driven, computationally powered, globally networked era. She described changes underway at Rensselaer as a model to enable this future.

Pottery Event at Pat's Barn 
The potters of the Collar City Clay Guild are excited to be holding their annual Pottery Show and Sale at Pat’s Barn. There will be close to 30 local clay artisans displaying for sale their functional and sculptural pottery, handmade tiles, and clay jewelry. This is a great time to shop local for a unique gift. There will be a live raku firing. You may be able to purchase a pot that you watched being fired! Great food from local favorites, The Brown Bagger in Troy and nuts from Tierra Farms, will be available.

Admission is $2.00. Your admission “ticket” is a small handmade tile made by local Guild members.
