DeFreestville Fire Department Station Grand Opening

On September 17th, 2016, the DeFreestville Fire Department hosted their new station grand opening. Alongside more than 125 firefighters, politicians, and local residents, Claude Rounds, Vice President of Administration for Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute attended the event on behalf of President Shirley Ann Jackson.

Rounds spoke at the event and expressed gratitude for the men and women of the Defreestville Fire Department who have protected the Rensselaer Technology Park Campus, along with the entire community for more than three decades. "The Fire Station is an extraordinary symbol for the strong partnership that has existed for over 35 years between Rensselaer (Polytechnic Institute) and the Town of North Greenbush. The completion and occupancy of this new home for the Defreestville Fire Department provides a permanent monument that will always remind Rensselaer of the important roles that the Town of North Greenbush and the North Greenbush community have played in the success of the Technology Park."

North Greenbush Fire District’s new station is a technologically advanced facility that incorporates 10,500 square feet of firematic space, 2,000 square feet of office space, and 2,600 square feet of meeting and training rooms.

Advanced Manufacturing: Educating The Next Generation of Innovators

Advanced manufacturing is accelerating the translation of American innovations in science and technology into new products and processes. This hits close to home at Rensselaer, as it continues to develop new strategies and programs to educate the next generation of innovators. This past summer, a team of Rensselaer students garnered second place during the annual American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) / Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) Student Manufacturing Design Competition.

The Student Design Competition provides a platform for ASME student members to present their solutions for a range of design problems—from everyday household tasks to groundbreaking space exploration. Each team is required to design, construct, and operate a prototype meeting the requirements of an annually determined problem statement.

Nano-Decoy Lures Human Influenza A Virus to its Doom

To infect its victims, influenza A heads for the lungs, where it latches onto sialic acid on the surface of cells. So researchers created the perfect decoy: A carefully constructed spherical nanoparticle coated in sialic acid lures the influenza A virus to its doom. When misted into the lungs, the nanoparticle traps influenza A, holding it until the virus self-destructs.

“Instead of blocking the virus, we mimicked its target – it’s a completely novel approach,” said
Robert Linhardt, a glycoprotein expert and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute professor who led the research. “It is effective with influenza and we have reason to believe it will function with many other viruses. This could be a therapeutic in cases where vaccine is not an option, such as exposure to an unanticipated strain, or with immune-compromised patients.”

The project is a collaboration between researchers within the
Center for Biotechnology and Interdisciplinary Studies (CBIS) at Rensselaer and several institutions in South Korea includingKyungpook National University.

The Power Of Smart Lighting: Occupancy Detection Using Lighting Becomes a Reality

A team of faculty and graduate students from the Rensselaer Polytechnic InstituteCenter for Lighting Enabled Systems & Applications (LESA) and Boston University was awarded a U.S. patent titled “Sensory Lighting System and Method for Characterizing an Illumination Space.” The patent describes how the LED lighting system in a space can detect occupants’ presence, location, and pose without the use of cameras, thereby preserving the privacy of the room’s occupants.

App Helps Save Man Having A Heart Attack

Richard Price, a former fire chief in Northern California, has developed an app called PulsePoint. The app, which works through a city’s 911 system, alerts people within a certain radius that CPR assistance is needed, along with the location of the nearest portable defibrillator. About 900,000 people around the country have downloaded and carry the app, and 34,000 people have been activated to respond, he said, adding that alerts have been issued in 13,000 cardiac events.
